What Anna Todd’s After series is to Harry Styles, Boulevard is to Luke Hemmings. The 5 Seconds of Summer musician will soon join the extremely small club of celebrities who have a fanfiction-turned-movie about them.
Based on a Wattpad story — which was later reworked and published as a novel — Boulevard has already caused quite a stir on social media. Even if you didn’t know the inspiration behind it, it’s pretty much impossible not to immediately make the connection if you’ve ever laid eyes on the 5 Seconds of Summer member. The lead love interest has been styled almost exactly like 2014-era Hemmings, lip ring and all. (And if you still had any lingering doubt, the character’s name is, indeed, Luke.)
Needless to say, our interest is piqued, especially after watching the newly released trailer. What is Boulevard about?
The Spanish-language story, which hasn’t been published in English yet, charts the romance of high school students Halsey Weigel and Luke Howland. The latter is a troublemaking misfit, but the optimistic Halsey is drawn to him against her better judgment. Once she sees beyond Luke’s damaged exterior, she wants to rescue him, and their unlikely romance blossoms.
What fanfiction is Boulevard based on?
Before it was picked up by Penguin Random House in 2023, Mexican author Flor M. Salvador’s story lived on Wattpad, where you can still read it. (Hemmings’ name has since been changed in that version.) The author has followed it up with two more installments: Después de El and Antes de Ella. The fourth, Eterno, is in progress.
When does Boulevard come out?
The movie, produced by Webtoons Productions, is slated for a 2026 release. Stay tuned for a specific date.
Who’s in the Boulevard cast?
Eve Ryan is Halsey. The actress is a relative newcomer, though she appeared as Betty in Prime Video’s Culpa Mía. Mikel Niso, her costar who plays Luke, is also new on the scene. In a translated Instagram post, director Sonia Méndez said of the leads, “I’m sure you’ll fall in love with them because they SHINE 🔥 ⭐️ ❤️”

The screenplay is by Spanish YA author Javier Ruescasa. “I can’t get tired of repeating it: for me it’s a dream that this is happening and I hope you all enjoy the result of all the love and affection that the whole team put into it ❤️🥲!” he wrote in a translated Instagram post.
