Michael Caine has become instantly recognizable for his notable roles throughout his decades in the industry, but the 92-year-old retired actor has been getting attention for another reason recently: His romance with his wife, Shakira, 78.
In the replies to a now-viral December 2025 X post, users have reacted to the movie-like beginning of their relationship. One commented that “bro raised the bar so high,” while another said, “This or nothing.” (Dozens more comments echo their sentiments.)
It comes on the heels of the actor’s latest appearance, during which he received an award at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, alongside his family. “I’ve been married for 52 years,” Michael said, per The Guardian. “I have loads of photographs, but none are of any of the movies I am in, it’s just family, because that’s my life.”
So, how did Michael Caine and Shakira Caine meet? What do we know about their family? Swooon has all of the details below.
Who is Michael Caine’s wife?
Shakira Caine (née Baksh) is a Guyanese-British former actress and model. After winning the title of Miss Guyana, she was a finalist in the 1967 Miss World pageant. She entered beauty contests in an effort to leave the country: Shakira quit school at 16 to work as a secretary at a U.S. Information Service office in Guyana, according to People. When the office was bombed, it left her eardrum ruptured and a scar on her cheek.

Shakira went on to act in a number of British films and advertisements. (The latter is what led to her eventual romance with her husband of 52 years.) In 1975, she even joined her husband in The Man Who Would Be King.
How did Michael Caine and his wife Shakira meet?
Caine and his wife, who is 14 years his junior, met by a combination of fate and his own persistence. The actor and his friend decided to stay home from the disco one night and watch some TV instead, and that’s when he spotted the woman who would become his wife. She starred in a Brazilian coffee commercial, Caine explained during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show.
“I saw this lady on the television in a commercial and fell in love instantly,” he said. “I just watched her, and I thought, ‘That’s the woman for me.’ And I said to my mate, ‘We’re going to Brazil in the morning and we’re gonna find her.'”
He realized he didn’t have to take a flight to find the woman of his dreams. They did wind up at the disco later, where he described his situation to an acquaintance, who actually worked for the company that made the commercial. He was informed that she lives on Fulham Road in London, and a friend gave him her number.
It wasn’t entirely smooth sailing from there: Caine said in a 2017 Wired interview that Shakira refused to go out with him at first when he called her over the next 10 days. “But on the last day she did, and we’ve never left each other since, and that’s how I met my wife,” he finished the story.
“I fell in love with her in about eight minutes,” the actor told the Radio Times in 2018. “It took her two hours to fall in love with me.”
Do Michael and Shakira Caine have kids?
They married in 1973, a few years after meeting, and they welcomed their daughter, Natasha, that same year. Caine also has another daughter, Dominique, whom he shared with his first wife, the late English actress Patricia Haines.
Natasha has also made her parents grandparents, having given birth to two boys and a girl. “I’m a big family man. I’ve got two grandsons … and I love ’em to bits,” Caine told the Radio Times. “I became a bit of a hero to them. I was watching cartoons with the eldest, and a trailer for one of the Batman films came on, and there’s me with Batman. He said, ‘Do you know Batman?’ I said casually, ‘Yeah, he’s a friend of mine.'”
