[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for Tell Me Lies Season 2.]
TV’s messy lovebirds, Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco, have finally defrosted, because Season 3 of Tell Me Lies is so close we can taste it. But before we dive back into Baird’s social scene, it’s clear we’re going to need a Season 2 relationship recap.
Tell Me Lies teases that Season 3 will be even more toxic and twisted than ever. However, before we can see what Lucy (Grace Van Patten), Stephen (Jackson White), and the rest of the gang get up to this season during the January 13 premiere, Swooon‘s got you covered with a look back at where we left off.
Scroll to find out what’s going on with each Tell Me Lies couple at the start of Season 3, in both 2008 and 2015.
Did Stephen and Lucy get back together?
By the end of Season 2, Stephen and Lucy, against all odds and rational thinking, have gotten back together. During Episode 7 of the second season, Stephen comes to the realization that Lucy may be the only person who loves him, flaws included. He tells her, “You loved me even though you knew the worst things about me, and I loved you, knowing the worst of you. That’s why we don’t work with anyone else.” Honestly, it would have been kind of cute if he weren’t a manipulative, toxic boyfriend.

That being said, moments after Stephen and Lucy have getting-back-together-sex, Lucy sleeps with Leo (Thomas Doherty), who has been her love interest for most of the season. Later in the episode, Stephen and Leo throw hands at a party, and surprise, surprise, Lucy jumps to the defense of Stephen (and his deeply smashed-in face). The Season 3 trailer makes it clear that, at least for now, Stephen and Lucy are an item once more.
Who are Stephen and Lucy with at the wedding?
In 2015, Stephen attends Bree (Cat Missal) and Evan’s (Branden Cook) wedding with his fiancée, who just happens to be Lucy’s (former) hometown bestie, Lydia (Natalee Linez). Lucy attends the wedding with Max (Edmund Donovan), her on-again/off-again boyfriend from Season 1.
However, Season 2 introduced a new variable when Stephen and Lucy hooked up at the wedding behind the backs of both their partners. This comes after Lucy texted Stephen, inviting him to watch her hot-tub hook-up with Max. While we wouldn’t take this to mean that Stephen and Lucy are back together in the 2015 timeline, too, it seems more in the cards now than it did before.

Why did Stephen and Diana break up?
Coming in with the most iconic move of the season, Diana (Alicia Crowder) finally breaks up with Stephen, convincing him that it was his decision to dump her after faking getting cut off from her family and lying about her LSAT score. Looks like Stephen isn’t the only deceptive mastermind in the friend group after all. As creator Meghan Oppenheimer put it in an interview with Vanity Fair, “Diana has won [Season 2] in the realest sense, because she actually got out of the bullsh*t and is going to be okay.”
How did Diana and Pippa start dating in 2015?
Meanwhile, at the wedding in 2015, Pippa (Sonia Mena) introduces everyone to her new girlfriend… Diana. Seriously, these people need new friends. While it is still unclear how Diana and Pippa came back into each other’s lives, we start to see a few clues from back in 2008, as Diana becomes a safe person for Pippa following her traumatic encounter with Chris (Jacob Rodriguez).

Are Bree and Oliver still together?
Thankfully, Bree and her creepy professor, Oliver, are no longer together. Turns out, Oliver (Tom Ellis) and his wife, Marianne (Gabriella Pession), were in an open relationship the entire time, even though Oliver led Bree to believe they were having an illicit affair. Oppenheimer, who is married to Ellis in real life, explained at the end of Season 2 that Oliver’s storyline had ended, “I think Tom was just wanting to do one season. I think that we wrapped up his storyline in a way that really worked for me. I don’t know where else we would go after that with him.”
In a turn of events, we now know that Ellis did return to film Season 3. While that storyline’s conclusion makes it unlikely that Bree will get back together with Professor McCreepy, it’s clear he’ll stir up more drama this season. Look out, Baird girlies!

What’s going on with Wrigley?
Poor Wrigley (Spencer House) had a particularly rough go of it during Season 2. While romance was not in his corner after his split from Pippa, Wrigley was at the heart of one of the most emotional moments this season. Wrigley’s brother, Drew (Benjamin Wadsworth), had been completely AWOL for most of the season. However, as soon as his little brother returned to Baird, Wrigley found out that Drew had died in his sleep after mixing booze and drugs.
During an interview with TV Insider, House explained, “I actually don’t know what we’re going to do in Season 3 because it’s hard for three seasons to do a constant spiral. So hopefully there’s maybe an arc of hope a little bit on the guilt he carries and the depression he deals with and stuff.”

Will Bree and Evan actually get married?
Finally, we have Bree and Evan, who are just minutes from getting married in the present day. That is, until Stephen sends Bree a voice memo that he had held onto for nearly a decade, waiting for the perfect moment to exact his revenge on his friend. Listening to the message, Bree learns that Evan and Lucy slept together while they were dating back in 2008.
For us, this is old news (Evan and Lucy slept together at the end of Season 1), but for Bree, this is a groundbreaking reveal about her groom and bridesmaid. With Bree’s newfound knowledge, not to mention her cryptic anonymous calls, it’s unclear whether she’ll actually make it down the aisle.
