[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for Industry Season 3.]
The characters of Industry aren’t really built for healthy, flourishing relationships, as the past three seasons of the HBO drama have proven. Pretty much everyone, including the cutthroat Harper Stern (Myha’la), is too busy trying to make it to the top of the financial food chain to worry about romance. (Sex is certainly on the table, though.) Yasmin Kara-Hanani (Marisa Abela) has pretty much carried Industry from a romantic standpoint.
Calling Yasmin’s relationships “romantic” might be a stretch, though, especially after watching her toxic, complicated “love” triangle play out in Industry Season 3. On one hand, there’s nepo baby CEO Henry Muck (Kit Harington), who seems like a decent guy at first but, true to Industry form, is revealed to be a total sleazebag. On the other hand, there’s her Pierpoint colleague Robert Spearing (Harry Lawtey), who’s desperately in love with Yasmin but is carelessly strung along by her.
The Season 3 finale resolves the drama by having Yasmin pick a guy, for better or worse. So, what do you need to remember about where Yasmin stands with Henry and Rob ahead of Season 4, especially now that we know Robert won’t return? Swooon has the latest on Yasmin’s love life below.
Did Yasmin and Robert end up together in Industry Season 3?
It took nearly three full seasons of push and pull, but Yasmin and Robert finally go all the way in the Season 3 finale. Not only that, but they also admit their love for each other. (Though, we have to keep in mind that Yasmin says she’s not sure she’s every really loved anyone, and we’re not sure that’s changed.)
Their moment of passion doesn’t come about under the best of circumstances. Yasmin has taken Rob to Henry’s mansion in the hopes of convincing her ex to hand over the seed money Rob needs for his new Little Labs venture. All the while, Yasmin is realizing that the lifestyle she’s become accustomed to will end in the wake of her dad’s death and scandal. Yasmin values security over love, and Rob can only offer the latter. As a last hurrah, she sleeps with Rob out in Henry’s gardens, which is when the love confession comes out.
Henry can help her with her legal troubles, the tabloids, her finances, and so on — so she goes to him after her emotional moment with Rob, telling Henry that they should be practical. They make it clear that there’s really no love between them, but that doesn’t really matter. They announce their engagement with Rob in attendance. “I’m sorry,” Yasmin tells him. He replies, “I understand.” Yasmin is planning her wedding by the episode’s end.
Is Robert in Industry Season 4?
After Yasmin makes her choice and Pierpoint throws him under the bus and fires him, Robert has no personal or professional ties keeping him in London. He trades Pierpoint for Silicon Valley when we last see him, trying to get his psilocybin pills start-up off the ground. We won’t get to see how his new journey plays out, however, since Lawtey chose not to return for Season 4.
Explaining his exit, Lawtey cited “scheduling conflicts,” though he was also happy with his character’s ending in Season 3. “Ultimately I feel like I’m in a place where I’ve said everything I had to say with a character, and I think both me and the writers felt mutually happy with where we left him,” Lawtey told The Telegraph. “There was actually a stage direction after my final line, in my final scene of the show, which literally read: ‘On Robert – transformation complete.’ And that sat really well with me. Now, I feel unmoored, but in a really good way. And ready for the next chapter.”
Industry boss Mickey Down echoed the actor in an interview with The Wrap. “We love Robert as a character. We love Harry as an actor. We think he’s going to go into massive things — he already has done. And it was, I think, a sort of mutual decision that we couldn’t make it work for the time that we had, but also that we had reached the conclusion of the character. And I think Harry reached his own conclusion.”
In a recent interview with TV Insider, co-creator Mickey Down pointed out that characters in Industry’s world “evolve” and move on when the time is right. “The show deals with people who are interrogating their trauma more and more. The characters of the show now stop and think about things in a way they didn’t when they were younger, which I think is a reflection of how you feel when you’re younger. You’re so single-minded in your approach to stuff when you’re 22, that by the time you get to 32, you look back at that person, you don’t recognize them, but you also realize what they’ve become, how they’ve shaped and been instrumental in the person you are at 32.”
