Last summer was all about The Summer I Turned Pretty, so this winter, it’s about time that a new YA romance skates its way into our hearts.
On January 8, Netflix finally revealed the trailer for its upcoming book-to-screen adaptation of Jennifer Iacopelli’s novel, Finding Her Edge. Inspired by Jane Austen‘s Persuasion, Finding Her Edge takes viewers into the high-stakes world of elite figure skating. Set to hit Netflix on January 22, this is one YA love story you don’t want to miss.
The series follows the Russo girls, the heirs to a struggling figure skating dynasty, focusing on the middle sister, 17-year-old Adriana (Madelyn Keys). In true love triangle fashion, Adriana trains for the World Championships with new partner Brayden (Cale Ambrozic), while still harboring feelings for her first love and former partner, Freddie (Olly Atkins). Of course, Adriana’s life becomes complicated when she and Brayden pretend to be a couple off the ice so they can land a sponsorship to keep the financially struggling Russo rink afloat. As Netflix puts it, “All is fair in love and skate.”

In the trailer, Adriana’s voiceover reveals, “There’s a feeling you get, on the ice. It’s magic. I haven’t felt that magic in a long time. After Freddie, it was never the same.” Now, it appears that Freddie has returned to train at Russo rink with Riley (Millie Davis). While there are clearly still feelings there, Adriana tells her coach (Meredith Forlenza), “Partnerships are business decisions, not romances.” Maybe that’s why Freddie tells his former partner, “You can skate with whoever you want.”
Without a partner, Adriana’s coach tells her that Brayden Elliott, who is seemingly hooking up with Adriana’s older sister, Elise (Alexandra Beaton), is looking for a partner. While Adriana quips, “He’s a cocky idiot, but he’s practically a ticket to the Olympics for whoever he pairs with.” Taking the ice with Brayden, Adriana agrees to “get used to one another,” building trust by allowing him to blindfold her.’

From there, things heat up as Freddie and Brayden get territorial over Adriana, with Brayden asking, “Is this the part where you tell me if I hurt her, you’re going to come after me?” That being said, Freddie makes it clear to Adriana that, now that they’re rivals, they need to keep things professional — even if that’s not necessarily what they want. According to Elise, skating isn’t about feeling the magic at all. She says, “If you want to win, this is what you have to do.”
