What To Know

  • The movie adaptation of Emily Henry’s novel Funny Story was announced in July 2024.
  • It was revealed in January 2026 that Netflix would be making the movie.
  • Henry, who penned the script, recently shared another update on Funny Story‘s status.

It’s a good time to be an Emily Henry fan. The author’s People We Meet on Vacation movie already altered our brain chemistry, and we have a feeling that the next four (yes, four!) adaptations of her books will do the same. Beach ReadBook LoversHappy Place, and Funny Story are already in the works.

Shortly after Swooon broke the news that Beach Read casting is currently underway, Netflix revealed that it would be the home of Funny Story and Happy Place. What’s more, the streaming service also shared a photo of Henry holding the Funny Story script, which she penned herself.

It inspired us to do a deep dive into the Funny Story movie. What else has been revealed about the adaptation so far? Is there any word about who will bring Miles and Daphne to life? We have all the latest updates below.

When is Funny Story coming out?

The rom-com adaptation was announced in July 2024, but few other details have been released since. There’s no release date quite yet, but fans think that may change soon. Around the same time that the Netflix news dropped, they also noticed that Funny Story’s status on IMDb had been updated.

Since Henry snapped a picture with it, we’re assuming the script is either completed or near completion. In that case, we’re betting that the film will move into the production stage sometime this year.

Who is in the Funny Story cast?

There’s no official casting yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating. Just ahead of the People We Meet on Vacation‘s premiere, Henry teased “special special special stuff” would soon be revealed via her Substack. Underneath the Instagram post, actor Calahan Skogman commented a blue heart — the same color as Funny Story’s cover.

Skogman is a popular fancast for several of Henry’s works, alongside Dylan O’Brien and Joe Keery. But the Shadow & Bone star is the only one of them to comment on starring in a Henry adaptation. Skogman spoke to Swooon when he was promoting his 2024 novel Blue Graffiti, and the topic of Henry’s books came up.

“She’s such a sweetheart and so, so talented,” he said. “She joined me on my book tour actually in Chicago, which was such a gracious thing for her to do. But her work is incredible, and we’re on the same page. I would kill to be in one of her films. I would kill to be in one of her films. It would be a great honor to be one of her romantic leads.”

Skogman even auditioned for People We Meet on Vacation — though not for the lead role of Alex. “That’s not the one that I’m going to be a part of, but hopefully one in the future,” he told Swooon. “Happy Place is great.”

Does that mean he could be aiming to play Wyn instead of Funny Story‘s Miles? Only time will tell, but he was hopeful about snagging a spot in Henry’s universe. “I think it will happen,” Skogman said.

What is Funny Story about?

Funny Story’s Daphne and Miles are opposites, but they have something in common. Daphne is a practical children’s librarian who’s just been dumped by her fiancé, Peter. After Daphne moved to his hometown, Peter realized he was in love with his childhood best friend, Petra. Petra’s ex, Miles, becomes roommates with Daphne, and they hatch a plan to fool their exes into thinking they’re together.
