[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Pitt Season 2 premiere, “7:00 a.m.”]

Trust The Pitt fans to pick up the smallest of details, especially when it comes to their ships. The medical drama’s Season 2 premiere offers a standout moment for Dr. Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball) and Dr. Mel King (Taylor Dearden) hopefuls (and viewers who enjoy their dynamic simply as a duo rather than a potential couple).

Mel cheerfully greets her colleague when he arrives for his first shift back after rehab, which gets some raised eyebrows from the other doctors. (“Sold to Dr. Langdon,” one even jokes before they move on.) Though Mel’s reaction has already become one of the most talked about points of the episode on social media, there’s a more subtle detail that’s sparked just as much buzz… because it could mean that Langdon’s relationship status has changed.

Why are fans speculating that Langdon’s marriage may be over? If he really is divorced, is Kingdon one step closer to being canon? Scroll for a full breakdown of the theory.

As Langdon opens his locker in Episode 1, his left hand is definitely wedding ring-less. In case you’re in need of a Season 1 refresher, Langdon briefly mentions his wife, Abby, and their two kids early on. Langdon’s home life is brought up when the doctor throws out the idea adopting a family puppy, but there wasn’t much else revealed about his relationship.

After Santos (Isa Briones) exposes that Langdon’s been stealing pills from patients, Robby (Noah Wyle) kicks him out of the ER. Though he returns to help treat the Pittfest shooting victims in Episode 15, Season 2 reveals that he’s been away for 10 months, getting therapy and treatment for his addiction. As he arrives for his first shift back in his street clothes, Langdon is wearing his ring at one point, but then it vanishes. It reappears when he’s on the floor.

It could mean that Langdon’s marriage hasn’t fared well over the past 10 months. “Maybe he puts it on at work to keep up appearances with coworkers and patients, but he knows the truth: his marriage is toast,” a fan commented on X.

Others have wondered if the ring’s appearance and disappearance could just be an error. “What EYE don’t understand is he was wearing in his street clothes with the ring ON but then had it OFF at the lockers and OFF with dana but then had it on again when he was getting his mel hug so ?3??33 is it continuity error or WHAT,” says one X post.

Ahead of Season 2, Ball teased the state of his character’s love life. In regards to Langdon’s marriage, he told Us Weekly, “Everything’s really great and I’m really happy.” Whether or not the actor was attempting to misdirect fans or avoid spoilers remains to be seen.
