Rose Byrne is a nominee at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 11. She’s up for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, award for her role in the film If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
Although Byrne has been in a relationship with Bobby Cannavale since 2012, he won’t be by her side as she attends the event in Los Angeles. In fact, he’ll be over on the East Coast tending to quite an unexpected family matter.
“He can’t come, which is such a bummer,” Byrne said on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. “He’s going to a reptile expo in New Jersey.”
While the Australian actress made the reveal quite casually, host Jimmy Fallon was floored. “What are you talking about?” he asked, as Byrne clarified that the event is taking place in “deep Jersey.”
Fallon questioned, “What is a reptile expo?” and Byrne finally explained, “We’re getting a bearded dragon.” When the talk show host asked if she was excited about the new family pet, she admitted, “I think they’re gorgeous. I think they like crickets, so … I had a friend who had one and she said that crickets do escape sometimes.”
As for why Cannavale has to attend an expo in New Jersey to get the pet, Byrne shared, “This expo’s, like, where everyone goes. It’s the place to go. And it was on the same day [as the Golden Globes]. And it would just be such a parent fail. So we’re doing it. I’m on board for the dragon. It’s gonna be great. [Cannavale’s] doing god’s work.”
Byrne and Cannavale started dating in 2012. They have two sons, born in February 2016 and November 2017.
Although Byrne and Cannavale never tied the knot, they consider themselves husband and wife. “I haven’t found a better word for it, to be honest,” Cannavale explained in 2020. “Boyfriend/girlfriend feels too young, partner feels too clinical. “You know, my ‘lady partner’? That feels weird. So it’s just easier. People don’t ask questions when you say, ‘It’s my wife.'”
At the Golden Globes, Byrne is nominated alongside Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: For Good), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).
