‘Bridgerton’ Season 4: Are Kate & Anthony in the Book? Their Role in Benedict’s Story, Explained
What To Know
- Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate (Simone Ashley) are absent from the Bridgerton Season 4 trailer and masquerade ball scenes.
- In Julia Quinn’s book An Offer From a Gentleman, Kate and Anthony play only minor roles in Benedict’s story.
- We’re breaking down their appearances in the book ahead of Season 4’s premiere.
[Warning: The below contains spoilers for An Offer From a Gentleman by Julia Quinn.]
As much as we’re ready for Benedict’s (Luke Thompson) Cinderella-esque romance with maid Sophie (Yerin Ha) in Bridgerton Season 4, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t just as excited to see what the other couples are up to. Of course, we include Season 2 leads Kate (Simone Ashley) and Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) among that number, which is why we were worried not to see them appear in the Season 4 trailer or in the stills of the Bridgerton masquerade ball.
Julia Quinn, the author of the Bridgerton book series, did provide some clarity about the latter event, which Kate and Anthony do attend in An Offer From a Gentleman. Via Instagram, Quinn revealed that Kate and Anthony are still in India while the rest of their family and the ton attend the ball. (They left for Kate’s home country back in Season 3’s Episode 7, so that Anthony can be informed on their soon-to-be-born child’s history.)
Though we know for certain that the couple will appear in Season 4, Swooon decided to revisit the book to see how large a role Kate and Anthony play in Benedict’s story and get some insight into their presence in Season 4. Admittedly, Bridgerton has already mixed up timelines by having Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin’s (Luke Newton) romance play out first, and it’s made plenty of other departures from the source material by giving other couples more to do. But it doesn’t hurt to study up so we can compare once Season 4 premieres!
In the beginning of An Offer From a Gentleman, Anthony and Kate are still expecting their first child, which we learn from Benedict’s conversation with Sophie two years after the fact. Violet decides to move out of Bridgerton House and hand it over to Anthony, Kate, and the baby they’re about to have. Violet hosts a masquerade ball as a last hurrah, which Anthony and Kate both attend. Their son, Edmund, is born a month later. Benedict also says that they had another son, Miles, roughly a year later.
They conversation is sparked by Benedict taking Sophie to his mother’s house, rather than Bridgerton House, for her to become part of the family’s maid staff. The morning after she joins the Bridgerton household, Sophie meets nearly all of the siblings, barring Gregory (who’s away at school) and Colin, who is at this point still a bachelor and traveling. (Remember, the show flipped the order of Benedict and Colin’s books).
That morning, Anthony stops by with his young son for breakfast at Violet’s house, and that’s pretty much all we see of him aside from one other scene. Two weeks after Benedict finds out that Sophie and the Lady in Silver he met at the masquerade are one and the same, Benedict is still irritable and betrayed. He’s approached by his brothers as he’s headed to his mom’s house, and the conversation topic becomes about Colin and his annoyance at Violet for pushing marriage and Penelope as a prospect. Remember, this happened in the Season 2 finale. Anthony escorts a dejected Penelope back home.
So, that’s pretty much the extent of Anthony’s involvement in the book, and Kate doesn’t get any action, either. But don’t worry too much, Kanthony fans: We know that Anthony will at least be involved in a wedding sequence, though whose wedding remains to be seen. (Sophie and Benedict’s wedding is only mentioned after the fact.) In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bailey revealed that he filmed some characters’ nuptials during Season 4 production. Here’s to hoping we get to see Kate and Anthony with their new baby in India, too!
