‘When Calls the Heart’s Chris McNally Teases Lucas & Edie Will ‘Turn the Heat Up’ in Season 13

Lucas (Chris McNally) and Edie (Miranda MacDougall), will they or won’t they? That’s the question that When Calls the Heart fans have been wondering ever since Edie was introduced in Season 12. There’s certainly chemistry between the governor and the attorney, but they haven’t stepped into romantic territory just yet.
Lucas and the rest of Hope Valley are busy dealing with the aftermath of the Goldie National Park fire, so will Lucas’ personal life be shelved this season? In an interview with Swooon, Chris McNally hinted at major developments for Lucas and Edie over the course of the season.
“I think that we get to explore things we have not yet ventured into with those two characters in Season 13, and we do turn the heat up between them, and we get to push farther and see what happens,” he said. “I think they’re both dealing with their own traumas from the past, which I think is a very realistic thing to deal with that people will understand and have experienced in their own lives as well. It’s a natural thing, I think, to overcome fear of getting hurt. People navigate that in different ways, so we get to see what happens with these two.”
Edie is Lucas’ first love interest since his breakup with Elizabeth. McNally reflected on Lucas’ past feelings for Elizabeth and how his dynamic with Edie is completely different.
“When Lucas first met Elizabeth, I think he was enamored by her,” McNally noted. “There was something about her, something about her aura, her personality, her energy, that he was really drawn to and then continued to pursue that heavily for quite some time.”
He continued, “And with Edie, it starts off in a very different place. She’s an adversary, so I think that beginning the journey by going head-to-head, or toe-to-toe, with two different minds on opposing sides creates an intriguing challenge and tension. I think that they begin on very different trajectories.”
