Linden graduated from Florida State University’s College of Communication, and he left his home state as soon as he got his degree. “I went to L.A. after graduating because I had no real job opportunities and my friend had four tickets to The Price Is Right,” he told FSU. “We drove out there, I got on, and I won $5,000 and a Tuscan Wine Server Cart. So I decided to stay. I got a temp job reading screenplays and was fascinated by them. I was hired and fired from a few assistant jobs, and so I figured I’d try writing a script myself.”
He continued, “The first screenplay I wrote with my friend Cory Helms, a University of Florida grad, unfortunately, was called Things to Do Before I Die. We got really lucky, and Warner Bros. bought it and gave us a blind deal for another script. I pitched them the Marshall story with a producer, Basil Iwanyk, who was also interested in it, and they bought that, too.”
Linden got his start in Hollywood by writing and coproducing We Are Marshall, a 2006 sports drama starring Matthew McConaughey. Next, he wrote and coproduced Dear John, an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel. It came out in 2010, six years after Linden’s future partner starred in Sparks’ The Notebook movie. Linden pivoted from writing to directing with 2011’s 10 Years, reuniting with Dear John actor Channing Tatum.
His latest writing credit is on 2016’s Money Monster, starring George Clooney. Linden rewrote the script for Tom Holland‘s 2021 film, Chaos Walking, though he went uncredited for it.
