A Deep Dive Into Heath Ledger’s Daughter & Michelle Williams Relationship
On January 22, 2008, Heath Ledger died from an accidental drug overdose at the age of 28. The actor was survived by a 2-year-old daughter, Matilda Ledger, whom he shared with actress Michelle Williams.
Ledger and Williams split in 2007, just months before he died in his New York City apartment. On the 18th anniversary of his death, scroll down to learn more about his daughter, his relationship with Williams, and more.
Who is Heath Ledger’s daughter?
Matilda turned 20 years old in October 2025, and Williams has mostly kept her out of the public eye throughout her life. The two moved out of the New York City home that Williams and Ledger shared shortly after the actor’s death, relocating to upstate New York for Matilda’s childhood. They have since moved back to Brooklyn amid Williams’ marriage to Thomas Kail.
Matilda’s godparents are Williams and Ledger’s Brokeback Mountain costar Jake Gyllenhaal, and Williams’ longtime friend/Dawson’s Creek costar Busy Philipps.
While Matilda grew up without her dad, she had a father figure in her life thanks to Jeremy Strong, a close friend of Williams’. He lived with Williams and her daughter on and off for three years. “Jeremy was serious enough to hold the weight of a child’s broken heart and sensitive enough to understand how to approach her through play and games and silliness,” Williams told Variety. “She didn’t grow up with her father, but she grew up with her Jeremy — and we were changed by his ability to play as though his life depended upon it, because hers did.”
Little is known about Matilda’s life today, but it’s rumored that she attends a liberal arts college. She has three half-siblings through her mother’s marriage to Kail. Williams gave birth to son Hart in 2020 and then another child in 2022. She and Kail welcomed another baby via surrogate in 2025, as well.
When Ledger died, his will stated that his assets would be left to his parents and sister, who made sure that Matilda became the sole beneficiary. “There was never any question about the fact that Heath’s estate would go to Matilda,” Heath’s father, Kim, explained in September 2008. “Never a question. We are very close to Michelle and Matilda.”
What happened between Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams?
Ledger and Williams began dating after meeting on the set of the movie Brokeback Mountain in 2004. She played his wife in the film. Less than a year after they were first spotted out in public together in December 2004, they were engaged, and Matilda was born in October 2005.
“Our initial meeting, the circumstances of how we first met, were cosmic or something,” Williams told GQ in 2012. “Yeah, a lot of things happened at once. It’s a bit like … we had a lot of things to do because we didn’t have a lot of time, or something.”

By September 2007, Williams’ father confirmed the couple had split. However, Philipps later revealed in her memoir that the two were already in the “process of separating” at her wedding to Marc Silverstein in June 2007.
Williams’ father, who did not have a relationship with the actress, but learned of the breakup from her mother, cited the pressures of Hollywood as a reason for the split. Philipps shared a similar reasoning in her book, noting, “They were just working all the time, and it was complicated. S**t is always complicated. Especially when you’re 28. And movie stars. With a baby.”
It’s also been reported that Ledger’s addiction struggles took a toll on the relationship. “He had a lifestyle that really wasn’t, at least in Michelle Williams’ eyes, compatible with raising a child and continuing in that relationship,” People magazine editor JD Heyman said in an interview with Access Hollywood.
How did Michelle Williams react to Heath Ledger’s death?
More than a week after Ledger’s death, Williams released her first public statement reacting to the news. “Please respect our need to grieve privately,” she said. “My heart is broken. I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father.”
She continued, “All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up with the best memories of him.”
Williams attended Ledger’s funeral and wake, where she arrived on the arm of his sister, Kate Ledger.
Over the years, the actress has spoken about her grief and how she’s had to raise Matilda as a single parent. “Obviously, for me and for [Matilda], there’s a hole in our life,” she told Marie Claire in 2011. “Of course, the natural inclination is to want to fill it and make it disappear, but what I’ve come to [realize] recently is that it’s impossible. Nothing will fill that hole.”
In 2018, she explained to Vanity Fair that she often tells Matilda, “Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes.” Most recently, she described Ledger as “so special” on the Armchair Expert podcast in 2025.
