Sarah Shahi is telling all about ending her 11-year marriage to Steve Howey. In her new book, Life Is Lifey: The A to Z’s on Navigating Life’s Messy Middle, the actress opens up about her divorce, including how long it actually took her to pull the plug.
The Sex/Life star admittedly knew her marriage was over for quite some time before she actually sat Howey down and told him she wanted to end things.
“‘I finally love myself more.’ Those five words took 10 years to say,” Shahi writes. “My voice shook the whole time. ‘I do love you,’ I repeated, ‘But I finally love myself more.'”
Shahi notes that it took “courage” for her to have this conversation. “I’d just told my husband of 11 years that I wanted a divorce. I wanted to leave the life we’d shared for more than 18 years with three healthy children and a cute little rescue dog to do life on my own. I hadn’t been on my own since I was 22. I was now 40. And my t*ts weren’t as perky.”
Much like her Sex/Life character, Shahi recalls that life began getting mundane as she focused on raising her children and being there for her husband on rough days. She says “consoling” Howey became “more damn work than the kids.”
Shahi and Howey met in 2003 on the set of Reba. They tied the knot in 2009, welcomed their son later that year, and then had twins in March 2015.
Nearly six years after Shahi told Howey she wanted a divorce, they’re amicable coparents. “It worked out for both parties involved,” she previously told Us Weekly. “There is no failure here. I was in a relationship for 18 years and have three beautiful kids. It is by every definition a success to me, and we have a beautiful relationship, Steven and I, now as coparents. It’s important to show the kids, in my opinion, that when something is out of sync, you have to have the courage to let it go.”
Following her breakup from Howey, Demos began dating her Sex/Life costar, Adam Demos. It was reported in 2025 that they split.
