Romance is complicated for most of the School Spirits crew, but Maddie (Peyton List) and Wally (Milo Manheim) take the cake in Season 3. Now that Maddie has returned to the land of the living, she can still see her ghostly love interest — but they’re literally in different places.
Well, different planes may be a more accurate phrasing. Despite being occupied with their mission to rescue Simon (Kristian Ventura) from limbo, Maddie and Wally share a romantic moment on the football field in Episode 1. A student records it on video, so it looks like Maddie is talking to thin air, and it circulates around the school. Maddie’s dealt another blow when someone tosses fake blood on her during picture day. She nearly hits her breaking point, having a foot in both the living and dead worlds.
Maddie confesses as much to Wally, who wonders if their relationship is making her situation worse. He even offers to take a break or call it quits, but Maddie shuts him down, reassuring Wally that he only makes her life better. In a joint interview with List, Manheim explained the couple’s decision to stay together and whether they have any lingering hesitations.
“Definitely,” he told Swooon. “I think that they’re really taking good care of this relationship, and they’re being very thoughtful about these things. It’s a very unique situation, and they want to make sure that they’re doing it right. I don’t think anybody in the history of the world has ever been through something this complex. But I think that obviously they want to honor how they feel about each other, but they also want to honor what is best for both of them moving forward.”
The actor teased, “And we don’t know what is possible in this world yet. I mean, it’s not like we’ve solved it, and it’s like, ‘All right now what?’ Things are ever-moving. I mean, the whole Simon being in [the ghosts’] world adds such a complex twist to our relationship.”
Does that mean Maddie and Wally’s romance might not be doomed, despite their circumstances? Manheim didn’t answer that question definitively. “I mean, it’s definitely just a tragic situation…” he said. “But don’t we love to be doomed a little bit? Don’t we love, ‘This can’t work, but yes it can’? I always love that. You know, so we’ll see.”
“I love asking you to be negative because you’ll put a positive spin on it,” List pointed out with a laugh.
