Bridgerton‘s fourth season may take its main inspiration from Cinderella, but early on in production, star Yerin Ha cited another swoonworthy piece of media as having some influence over costar Luke Thompson‘s onscreen appearance as Benedict.

When TV Insider asked Ha in October 2024 about any pop culture inspirations playing a role in Benedict and Sophie’s love story, she said, “It’s funny because there was a scene, and I literally said to Luke, ‘You’re giving Mr. Darcy vibes, 100 percent.’ So I guess Pride and Prejudice for me… I don’t think the showrunners are thinking that, but for me, I’m thinking Pride and Prejudice.”

Now, more than a year later, Ha is offering a follow-up to her Darcy vibes application after Swooon asks her about which onscreen Darcy she was thinking of and which scene she attached that sentiment to. The response may surprise some.

Matthew Macfadyen in 'Pride & Prejudice'

“I think what I meant was not so much about Benedict’s character’s arc, but I think my vision, I’ll clarify this for you, was Matthew Macfadyen‘s version of Mr. Darcy when he’s in the rain,” Ha notes, citing the scene in 2005’s Pride and Prejudice when Darcy ill-fatedly proposes to Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley).

“When Luke came out of the lake with wet hair and put on this top that looked very similar to [Darcy] in the rain, I just felt like it gave Mr.  Darcy vibes, and that was what I was meaning,” Ha says, setting the record straight. “The wetness, I think, was very similar… That’s what I was getting at.”

The scene’s tone could also be applied as a viewer looking in from the outside as Benedict confronts Sophie, accusing her of spying on him. Despite the initially playful banter, the accusatory tone gets a little fiery, and eventually it leads Sophie and Benedict to kiss, following through on the charged moment in that Pride and Prejudice scene in which it almost appears that Darcy and Elizabeth might lock lips.

Of course, there are always more parallels for fans to find, like the moment Benedict helps Sophie into the carriage at Cavender House, and he lingers in holding her hand, feeling a connection he can’t quite put his finger on, reminiscent of the now-famous hand-flex scene between Darcy and Elizabeth.
