Quite often, Bridgerton has surprised readers of author Julia Quinn’s book series, but Netflix’s fourth season of the Regency romance — which is based on Quinn’s An Offer From a Gentleman — might be the most book-accurate so far. Both versions chart Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and maid Sophie’s (Yerin Ha) forbidden romance, during which Benedict asks Sophie to become his mistress.
Quinn doesn’t have the final say on the show’s storyline, but she does work as a consultant on the series. When Swooon met with the author, courtesy of Spotify — which recently launched its Page Match feature that connects physical and e-books to its collection of audiobooks, including Bridgerton — we asked if there was anything Quinn insisted the show not change from An Offer From a Gentleman.
“No,” she said. “I mean, the one thing that I did talk about was like, you guys need to make it clear that that’s how it is with mistresses and stuff. Because I felt like when I wrote the book, the audience for the book was probably far more steeped in Regency knowledge and tradition and the customs. And so, they got it. Even though some of them were really upset, and they had the same reaction, I think the bulk of them understand the time frame that I’m writing in.”
Quinn, who just launched JQ Editions, a new historical romance special edition subscription box, warned the show’s creators that some viewers wouldn’t understand the context of Benedict’s offer. She thinks it’s important for fans to understand what a “big deal” class was during the Regency era. “‘You really need to make it clear that this is how it was and for him to… that it would just make no sense for him to ask her to marry him straight off,” she recalled telling the show’s team. “‘It wouldn’t have happened.'”

Netflix
The author’s prediction was correct. Since the first batch of Season 4 episodes dropped, fans have been split about whether Benedict was wrong to ask such a thing of Sophie in Episode 4. “Maybe he didn’t need to be kind of clunky and say, ‘Be my mistress.’ I mean, maybe he should have said something like, ‘I’ll take care of you. I’ll get you a house,'” she admitted.
Despite his not-so-great execution, Quinn affirms that Benedict’s offer is realistic — and actually very significant. “It would never have occurred to a man of his rank and social status to marry a domestic servant,” she said. “It just wouldn’t have happened. And this, what he offers her, is really a big thing, and to him, that is how they can be together.”
The author doesn’t think fans should focus as much on Benedict’s offer but more on the “fact that he evolved and changed, and I don’t think it’s a spoiler that they’re going to live happily ever after,” if the show sticks to the book. “And eventually, he will offer her marriage, so I hope I’m not spoiling anything. The fact that he gets past that and decides that she is more important than societal norms. Their love is more important than what might happen with society.”
Quinn has a request for readers and viewers: Don’t judge Benedict so harshly. She added, “It’s tough because, on the one hand, people yell at you if you’re not being historically accurate, and then if you are being historically accurate, then they’re just like, ‘Why did he do that?’ That’s how it was!”
