Hayley Kiyoko‘s Girls Like Girls has gone from song to music video to book form — and now it’s getting a movie adaptation. Kiyoko can add “director” and “screenwriter” to her resume with Girls Like Girls, which tells a queer coming-of-age love story.
When the film was announced, Kiyoko shared that she’d been dreaming of getting it made for almost a decade. “Since I released girls like girls in 2015, I’ve made a vow to myself and to you all to do everything in my power to create hopeful queer content at the largest scale possible,” she wrote on Instagram. “The road map has never been clear, I’ve just kept believing that if I kept trying, that one day a road could be paved. We made it.”

Who is in the Girls Like Girls cast?
Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy will play love interests Coley and Sonya. Da Costa, who will make her feature film debut with Girls Like Girls, is best known for appearing in Hulu’s Under the Bridge miniseries.
“I still have no idea what to say but it’s something along the lines of I’m so grateful and excited for the opportunity to be part of telling this iconic story. Hayley and everyone else who holds this story in their heart, thank you for trusting me and I can’t wait to show you what I’ve got💘 👩❤️💋👩xo~coley,” da Costa wrote on Instagram.
Molloy appeared in He’s All That, Netflix’s She’s All That reboot. In 2025, she made her Broadway debut as Eurydice in Hadestown, after she starred as Kim in the 2018-19 national tour of Miss Saigon.

Levon Hawke — Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke‘s son, who recently starred in Marty Supreme — and Zach Braff are also part of the Girls Like Girls cast.
Kiyoko, who also contributes new music to the film, wrote the screenplay alongside actress Stefanie Scott. The producing team includes Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Michael Philip, Jason Moring, Richard Alan Reid, Katie McNicol, and Dee Best.
What is Girls Like Girls about?
The story is based on Kiyoko’s song and book of the same name, unfolding over the course of a summer in rural Oregon. Seventeen-year-old Coley is forced to become the new girl in town after losing her mother. She meets (and is instantly attracted to) Sonya, but she’s hesitant to open up her heart. Not only has she never been with a girl before, but everyone Sonya has ever loved has left her. From there, Coley goes on a journey of first love and self-acceptance.
