What To Know

  • Brothers Jack and Quinn Hughes both make their Olympic debuts in 2026.
  • They’re on Team USA’s men’s hockey roster.
  • Their mom serves as a consultant for the women’s team.

The 2026 Winter Olympics are a family affair for the Hugheses. Jack and Quinn Hughes are one of two sets of siblings — alongside the Tkachuk brothers — on Team USA’s men’s hockey roster. They’re making their Olympic debuts at the same time. That, on its own, is a rare enough occurrence, but they aren’t even the only members of their family in Milan. Their mom, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, is a consultant for the women’s team. She’s worn a Team USA jersey in the past, too.

It might not be a surprising development for those well-versed in all things professional hockey. The Hughes family has been in the spotlight for years, making history as the only American family to have three brothers — yep, there’s another one — selected in the first round of the NHL draft. And before you ask, their dad is involved in the hockey world, too. As Jack and Quinn aim for gold in Milan, you can read up on the Hughes brothers, their parents, and their backgrounds below.

Who is Jack Hughes?

When he isn’t wearing a Team USA jersey, Jack is representing the New Jersey Devils. He was picked first overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, and during the seven seasons since then, the 24-year-old center (and forward) has become the franchise’s star player. During his 2022-23 season, Jack set a franchise record with 99 points and 46 goals in a single season, leading his team to the playoffs. The 2026 Olympics aren’t the first time he’s played on an international stage, but it’s his first time at the Games.

Less is known about Jack’s life off the ice, but fans do know that he was born in Orlando, Florida, and grew up in Toronto, Canada. When he was in high school, his family moved to Michigan so he could participate in the U.S. National Team Development Program. He learned to skate when he was just two years old and started playing at five years old, learning alongside his brothers. He’s the middle child out of the three of them.

Jack is currently rumored to be dating singer Tate McRae after they were first spotted together in November 2025. She was pictured at one of Jack’s games the following month, but neither has spoken out about their relationship.

Who is Quinn Hughes?

Quinn is the eldest Hughes brother. The 26-year-old has played defense for the NHL’s Minnesota Wild since December 2025. He was traded to the team after becoming the captain of the Vancouver Canucks and played seven and a half seasons with them. During his 2023-2024 season, Quinn led NHL defensemen in points and assists and earned the 2024 Norris Trophy as NHL’s top defenseman. Before he was drafted seventh overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, Quinn played two seasons at the University of Michigan, where he studied Sport Management.

Like Jack, Quinn was born in Florida and grew up in Toronto, playing for the Toronto Marlboros in his youth. He played junior hockey with U.S. National Team Development Program before starting his college career. He’s currently rumored to be dating influencer Olivia Boon. They seem to have been linked since 2023, but neither have confirmed their relationship status.

Who is Luke Hughes?

Though Luke didn’t make the Olympic roster, his career path is similar to his brothers. The 22-year-old defenseman had a spot in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, and he spent two seasons playing for the University of Michigan before entering the 2021 NHL Draft. Luke was picked fourth by the New Jersey Devils, and he’s played alongside Jack ever since. He only appeared in two games during the 2022-23 season, but had 80 more appearances the following year. In January 2026, Luke was placed on long term-injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Not much is known about his personal life, but Luke, who was born in New Hampshire, started hockey because his brothers did. “Both my brothers played so I just grew into it,” he said. “I was 2 or so when I was playing mini-sticks and playing on ponds. I really started around 4 years old… We always wanted to be the best at it, me and my brothers. We played everything — soccer, golf, basketball and baseball. Hockey was what we fell in love with and stuck with it.”

Who are the Hughes brothers’ parents?

The apples don’t fall from the tree. Before she was a consultant, Ellen played college hockey at the University of New Hampshire. She also represented U.S. women’s national team in the early 1990s, winning a World Championship silver medal, though she didn’t play in the Olympics. Ellen did cover the Olympics as a broadcaster, however, and she’s been keeping up with skills and skating lessons since.

Her husband, Jim, played hockey for Providence College. From there, he went into coaching. He served as an assistant coach of the Boston Bruins before becoming the Director of Player Development for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“They grew up in an environment where they were around executives in the business,” Ellen said of her sons, per NJ.com. “If they wanted to go with their father to the rink, they were listening to coaches talk, to general managers talk. They’re not intimidated by this environment because they’ve grown up in this environment. That’s nothing you can teach them. It’s organically happened for them.”

Though Ellen helped her sons learn how to skate, Ellen said, “It wasn’t mom and dad hovering over them saying, ‘You didn’t practice hard enough.’ They had to find at a really young age their own inner drive. They had to guide themselves and hold themselves accountable at games and practices.”
