Tara Lipinski lives a public life with her work husband, Johnny Weir, on The Traitors and as figure skating commentators, but she’s also fulfilled in her personal life with husband Todd Kapostasy. The two married in 2017 and started trying to expand their family shortly after that.

However, they ran into major fertility struggles along the way, which Lipinski opened up about for the first time in 2025. In an Instagram post, she revealed the hardships she’d gone through over the past five years while trying to conceive a child.

Does Tara Lipinski have kids?

Yes, Lipinski has a daughter named Georgie, who was born via surrogate. She and Kapostasy confirmed their baby news in an October 2023 interview with People, just two months after the former pro athlete first opened up about her fertility issues.

Georgie is biologically Lipinski and her husband’s child. One of the embryos that the couple made through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) was implanted into their surrogate, Mikayla, in early 2023.

Two years after Georgie was born, Lipinski gave People an update on her plans for more children. “We are definitely wanting to bring a sibling to Georgie, so we are in the process of starting our second journey,” she dished. “But that’s a long process and there’s always what ifs with that, but fingers crossed, but maybe that can happen for us.”

In a 2024 Instagram Q&A, she revealed that she and Kapostasy had seven embryos on ice, and were hoping to use more of them. “I am thinking 3 (maybe 4 – @toddkap 🫣),” she wrote. “I am so grateful for our Gigi and will be so grateful for another one. If my journey taught me anything I know nothing is guaranteed so I still get nervous.”

What fertility issues did Tara Lipinski have?

In her August 2023 Instagram post, Lipinski revealed that she and Kapostasy started their journey to conceive in 2018. Within the next five years, she had “been under anesthesia 24 times, have had 4 miscarriages, 4 D&C’s, 6 failed IVF transfers, 8 retrievals and a diagnosis of endometriosis that led me to 2 major surgeries.”

A D&C, which is short for dilation and curettage, is a procedure “to remove tissue from inside your uterus,” which is done to “clear the uterine lining after a miscarriage or abortion,” according to Mayo Clinic.

Lipinski clarified that she and Kapostasy are able to make healthy embryos, but she is not able to carry them successfully.

Why did Tara Lipinski use a surrogate?

Lipinski chose surrogacy over adoption because the adoption process can be very long and isn’t always straightforward. “[We had] all these biological embryos sitting on ice,” she explained to Today. “We weren’t going to take all our hard work and move to a different avenue. I was ready after all that trauma to use surrogacy and to move into a new phase of life.”

She also revealed that she considers Georgie’s surrogate to be like “family.”

Who is Tara Lipinski’s husband?

Kapostasy is a producer and director who mostly works on sports documentaries and commercials. His credits include the opening sequence of Thursday Night Football in 2023, an episode of 30 for 30, the TV miniseries Meddling, and more. He’s also worked on commercials for Nike.

The couple met at the Sports Emmy Awards in 2015. “Four years ago tonight I first laid eyes on @taralipinski,” Kapostasy wrote in a May 2019 Instagram post. “I couldn’t be more thankful that a fun (some more romantic types might even say serendipitous) series of events brought us together.”

Their first interaction came when Lipinski presented her now-husband with an award at the event. “Of the 45+ Emmys given out that night, @taralipinski happened to hand me mine,” he reflected in another Instagram post. “I didn’t think much of it- aside from the fact she that she looked great in her blue dress. The next day I discovered that my Aunt had become friends with Tara while covering the Olympics a few years back. It took a little convincing, but @cjansing eventually agreed to introduce us.”

In her own post, Lipinski once recalled, “May 5th, 8 years ago on that very stage handing him an Emmy thinking his shoes were nice and also thinking ‘man this guy wins a lot.'”

After two years of dating, they got married on June 24, 2017. In 2023, the couple started a podcast called Unexpecting about their fertility journey, although there has not been a new episode since the end of 2024.
