Ilia Malinin is the breakout star of the 2026 Winter Olympics. In his Olympics debut, he’s already a gold medal winner in the figure skating team event, and now he’s looking to run it back in men’s singles.
Among Ilia’s many supporters are his parents, mom Tatiana Malinina and dad Roman Skorniakov, who are also two of his coaches. Scroll down for everything we know about the pro figure skater’s family.
Who are Ilia Malinin’s parents?
Ilia’s parents are both figure skaters and former Olympians themselves. They both competed for Uzbekistan at the Olympics in 1998 and 2oo2 before retiring from figure skating that year.
In 1998, Tatiana finished in eighth place at the Olympics, while she had to withdraw from the Games in 2002 after the short program while battling the flu. Roman finished in 18th place both times he competed at the Olympics.
When Tatiana and Roman retired from figure skating, they became coaches at a facility in Virginia.

Ilia previously told CBS News that his parents actually didn’t want him to start skating, but accepted that he would be following in their footsteps when they realized how good he was. “They wanted me to do something else, ’cause they know,” he shared. “They went through all those years of hard work, dedication, commitment to get to where they were, two-time Olympians.”
Why does Ilia Malinin have his mother’s last name?
Ilia has the Russian masculine version of his mother’s last name because his parents reportedly thought his father’s last name, Skorniakov, would be too difficult for Americans to pronounce.
Are Ilia Malinin’s parents American citizens?
Tatiana and Roman were born in Russia, but they are both now American citizens. Amid their figure skating careers, they lived in Uzbekistan, but since practice conditions for their sport were not great there, they moved to Virginia in 1998.
Does Ilia Malinin have siblings?
Yes, Ilia, who was born in 2004, has one younger sister, Elli. She was born in 2014 and is 10 years younger than him. Elli goes by the nickname Liza and is also a figure skater.
