John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are one of Hollywood’s ultimate power couples. Their relationship has very much been in the spotlight since they tied the knot in 2013, and they’re extremely open about their personal lives.

That, of course, includes the family they’ve built together over the years, even when moments have not been easy for them. Ahead of Legend’s return to The Voice for Season 29, scroll down to learn more about his kids with Teigen.

How many kids do John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have?

Legend and Teigen are parents to four children. Their first child, daughter Luna, was born in April 2016, followed by son Miles, who was born in May 2018. Both children were born via in-vitro fertilization (IVF), as Legend and Teigen experienced fertility issues due to her endometriosis.

After dealing with a pregnancy loss in 2020 (more on that below), the couple went on to welcome two more children. In January 2023, Teigen gave birth to another baby girl, Esti, and that June, the family added a baby boy, Wren, who was born via surrogate.

Teigen announced she was pregnant with Esti in August 2022. Amid her pregnancy, fans were unaware that she and Legend were also already planning for a fourth child. She explained how they ended up welcoming two kids in six months in an Instagram post.

Teigen said that after her pregnancy loss, she didn’t think she’d be able to carry another child on her own, so she and her husband reached out to a surrogacy agency in 2021. They inquired about “perhaps having 2 tandem surrogates, to each bring us a healthy baby boy or girl.” But amid the surrogacy journey, Teigen was also in therapy and said she left a session feeling like she wanted to try to carry her own child one more time.

The couple went through another round of IVF and made new embryos, and Teigen got pregnant with Esti. “Around this same time, we also met the most incredible, loving, compassionate surrogate you could ever imagine,” she added. “I knew she was a perfect match for us the moment we spoke to her.”

So, they decided to still go through with the embryo transfer with the surrogate. The first didn’t survive, but while Teigen was carrying Esti, the surrogate learned a second transfer was successful, and she gave birth to Teigen and Legend’s fourth child in June 2023.

What happened to John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s son Jack?

In September 2020, Teigen and Legend lost their third child, a son named Jack, when the model was 20 weeks pregnant. “We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough,” she recalled in an Instagram post at the time.

The pregnancy loss came after Teigen was put on bed rest for excessive bleeding in her placenta. At the time, she referred to the loss as a miscarriage, but later clarified in 2022 that it was actually a life-saving abortion.

“It became very clear around halfway through that he would not survive, and that I wouldn’t either without any medical intervention,” she explained, adding that the procedure saved her life “for a baby that had absolutely no chance.” Teigen also admitted that she “never, ever put together” that she had an abortion until a few months later.

Legend recalled the devastating situation in a 2024 interview. “She was miscarrying and bleeding out and all these things were happening,” he shared, clarifying that Teigen’s “life was in danger” at the time.

What was John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s son Miles diagnosed with?

Miles was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Teigen confirmed the diagnosis in July 2024 after fans noticed that he was wearing a glucose monitor in photos. He received the diagnosis after being hospitalized for shigella, “an intestinal infection caused by bacteria in food or water,” Teigen explained, adding that several of his friends from camp also had the illness.

“But the doctors knew something else was off about his blood tests,” the model continued. “I’ve learned since then that this is how so many young children end up being diagnosed with type-1 — going to the hospital for something completely different.”

Further testing revealed that Miles was in the “honeymoon period” of Type 1 diabetes, which he has been managing with insulin ever since.

How did John Legend and Chrissy Teigen meet?

Teigen and Legend met in 2006 when she played his love interest in the music video for “Stereo.” While appearing on Watch What Happens Live in 2018, Teigen admitted that she “closed the deal” with her now-husband on the first day they met.

“We were on a music video set all day together and then I went to one of his shows and then … yeah,” she shared. They’ve both admitted that they kept things casual at first, and that marriage was on neither one of their radars. By 2007, when they took a trip to Lake Como, Italy, Teigen knew she wanted to marry the singer, she once revealed in an Instagram post.

Teigen and Legend got engaged at the end of 2011 and tied the knot in 2013, first in a NYC courthouse, and then back in Lake Como the following week.
