‘Tell Me Lies’ Star Shares Her Theory on How Stephen & Lydia Got Together

Tell Me Lies dropped a number of bombshells before it wrapped Lucy’s (Grace Van Patten) toxic relationship with Stephen (Jackson White) in its third and final season. In the show’s 2015 storyline, Stephen (Jackson White) wreaks havoc at his friends’ wedding and spares no one — including his then-fiancée and Lucy’s ex-best friend, Lydia (Natalee Linez).
True to form, Stephen reveals he cheated on Lydia with Lucy that morning. As he dumps her, Stephen says he only ever got with her to make Lucy jealous, and that’s that. Viewers never find out how and when exactly Stephen and Lydia got together. Linez, however, has a theory.
“I always took it as, after college in their twenties, they ran into each other in the city,” Linez said in a TikTok video posted shortly after the finale aired. “Mutual friend thing, and they got together after that. Number one, because they were both single and lonely. Number two, to get revenge at Lucy. Lydia was probably manipulated by him, even if she was doing it out of revenge [against] Lucy, he probably made her fall in love with him.”
Remember, Lydia and Lucy had a falling out when the latter claimed Chris, Lydia’s brother, sexually assaulted her. Lucy said she was to protect Pippa (Sonia Mena), who was sexually assaulted by him.
Lydia doesn’t appear much in the series after that, which Linez knew would be the case early on. “I knew from the very beginning of Season 2 that Lydia’s storyline was not going to be big at all for the rest of the series,” Linez explained in the video. “I was still a recurring role. If she was going to be a bigger part of the story, I would’ve been contractually bound to the show because that’s how it works in acting.”
Ahead of Season 3, the actress said, “People were like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t wait to see what happens between Lydia and Stephen.’ By then I was filming other shows, I knew for a fact that in Season 3, there was going to be no storyline with how they met.”

She thought said storyline wasn’t needed ultimately, since the show had “so many amazing characters and stories that they had to get through.” Linez continued, “As an actor, to be apart of such an iconic show, there’s really nothing more than you can ask for. Something that I think will literally go down in this generation’s history. Not to mention to be part of that plot twist [that Stephen and Lydia were dating]. Like, What the helly.”
