We’ve met Mary, and now we can officially introduce you to John Matthew. Swooon can exclusively reveal that Bobby Hogan will play the key role in the upcoming second season of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.
The Passionflix drama, based on J.R. Ward’s bestselling book series, is set to start production in March 2026, with Season 2 premiering later this year. Hogan is joining Audrey Hare, who will play Mary, as one of the new cast members of Season 2, which will be based on Ward’s Lover Eternal.
“What stood out about Bobby was how naturally he carries a quiet strength. Something integral to the character of John Matthew. He has a genuine sincerity that will make you root for him immediately,” founder and CEO of Passionflix, Tosca Musk, said in a statement.
“I knew Bobby was our John Matthew the moment I saw his audition! He has the ability to seem both youthful and grave, and the fact that he is fluent in ASL meant he was beyond the right fit. We are grateful to have him!” Ward raved.
John Matthew, who is mute, was abandoned at birth and raised in a Catholic orphanage, unaware of his vampire heritage. His connection with Mary (and Bella, who is the leading lady of Lover Awakened) brings him face-to-face with the Black Dagger Brotherhood and the truth about who he really is. Without giving away everything, John Matthew is the reincarnation of a certain character with close ties to Beth.
The character is one of the leads of Lover Mine, the eighth book in Ward’s book series. Rhage (Alexander Cubis) and Mary’s love story, will be the focus of Season 2.
Prior to The Black Dagger Brotherhood, Hogan has appeared in several television shows, including episodes of Chicago P.D., S.W.A.T., FBI, and American Horror Stories. He also starred in the 2023 film Remy & Arletta.
