In Bridgerton Season 4, Penelope’s (Nicola Coughlan) storyline revolves around her managing the Lady Whistledown gossip column as a public figure — and eventually stepping away from it, deciding that the power she holds over the Ton is too great. Colin (Luke Newton), ever the supportive husband, stands by her side as she moves on to her next chapter.
It’s not abnormal for pre-existing Bridgerton couples to fade away after they have their star turn, à la Season 1’s Simon (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor). Naturally, we wondered about the future of Polin after Season 4, especially now that Penelope’s Whistledown arc has ended. We went straight to the source — showrunner Jess Brownell — to find out if Colin and Penelope would return in Season 5.
Rest assured, the Bridgerton boss confirmed that Season 4 isn’t the last we’ll see of the Season 3 leads. “I think we’re really excited to see the way their relationship develops as both being novelists,” Brownell told Swooon, referring to Penelope’s career change in Season 4’s finale episode. “But I think chiefly what will be interesting is seeing the way that they each are there for their various siblings.”
“Obviously, Penelope has a very close relationship with Eloise [Claudia Jessie], and that’s something that we will continue to discover,” the showrunner added. “Colin, I think, has a very close relationship with his brothers, with Eloise, and also with the younger siblings.”
Brownell pointed out Colin’s bond with Gregory (Will Tilston) as one of her favorites. In Season 4, the youngest Bridgerton brother goes to Colin for advice on matters of the heart. “I think there’s a really interesting dynamic there, as we saw in Colin’s season, Gregory kind of looking up to his older brother when he came back from his travels,” she said. “So there are a lot of sibling threads that we’ll continue playing with.”
