Kyle Fraser‘s journey on Season 50 of Survivor came to an early end after he tore his achilles tendon during the first immunity challenge. The Season 48 winner was able to stay in the game after the incident, but a visit from the doctor the next day revealed that his leg was injured more than they initially believed.
He returned home and had surgery a few days later. Months of recovery followed, including two months where he couldn’t even walk. Luckily, he had his wife, Maggie Turner, whom he married in September 2024, by his side throughout the entire ordeal.
“I was very scared to call her because the spouses of Survivor know you only get a call at one or two points, most likely,” Fraser tells Swooon. “Maybe [at] the merge, a group comes home, sometimes they’ve done that, or at the end of the game. So for her to get a call just four or five days into the game was probably terrifying for her, and I think she was caught a little off guard.”
As “tough” as it was for Turner to get that call, Fraser also notes that she was “excited” for him to come home. “In a way, I think she was glad to have me home, if it had to shake out this way,” Fraser admits.
He says his wife “waited on me day and night,” noting that recovering from an Achilles tear is “very tough.” Fraser adds, “I didn’t walk for essentially the first two months of the injury. I couldn’t even use crutches for the first two weeks, so she was constantly grabbing things for me, helping me get to the shower, staying home from work to do things for me, walk our dogs herself. She’s the partner I’m going to be with for the rest of my life, and it’s been made clearer and clearer why that is every day.”
Fraser confirms that he’s doing “really well” eight months later. Plus, he and Turner have a lot to celebrate, as they’re currently expecting their first child, due in May. The couple announced Turner’s pregnancy in January and, one month later, confirmed they’re having a baby girl.
