Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) may be eager to see her of-age children settle down, but the matchmaking mama isn’t quite there yet in Bridgerton Season 4. When Marcus (Daniel Francis) comes into the picture, the widowed Violet gets some action in the romance department, initiating a physical relationship with him. (Spoilers for Part 2 of Bridgerton Season 4 ahead.)

But when Marcus later confesses his love and proposes marriage, Violet turns him down in favor of her independence. Marcus ends their affair there, despite Violet’s wish that they keep seeing each other casually. In a fictional world where most romances lead to happily-ever-after marriages — barring a few exceptions — it’s an unexpected move for Bridgerton.

In conversation with Swooon, showrunner Jess Brownell explained Violet’s choice and revealed if there’s more in store for the couple. “It did feel a little early for Violet to settle down with a man when this was the very first guy she dated after her husband died,” she said, referring to the late Edmund Bridgerton, who died before his eighth child was born.

She continued, “So, I think she has a bit more self-discovery to do before she’s ready to settle down — if she should decide to ever settle down.”

That doesn’t mean that Marcus will disappear, however. “I’m very interested to see Marcus in the world again in the future,” Brownell explained. “You know, he’s Lady Danbury’s brother and had this connection with Violet… But yeah, I feel like their breakup was so sudden. I think there’s probably another cross at minimum between them and the future.”

While a Violet-Marcus endgame is still up in the air — the Bridgerton matriarch doesn’t get her own partner in Julia Quinn’s book series, so there are no hints there — the showrunner indicated that there’s still more story to tell about them.
