‘Bridgerton’: Which Couple Has the Best Proposal? (POLL)
It’s not Bridgerton if a couple doesn’t always get their happily ever after. In every case so far, that’s meant marriage. However, any fan could tell you by now that the weddings of the past four seasons vary greatly — as do the proposals. That’s why Swooon wants to know which one you like best.
Before we get your response in the poll below, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Season 1’s Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon’s (Regé-Jean Page) wedding was hastily arranged after they were caught in a compromising position, so they didn’t get a traditional proposal. In fact, in Episode 4, Simon duels Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) instead, and Daphne puts an end to it by announcing that she and Simon will marry.
So, for the sake of this post, we’ll consider Simon’s plea to the Queen (Golda Rosheuvel) as his “proposal.” After all, it’s his Episode 5 speech about falling for Daphne that convinces the once-reluctant Queen to grant them a special license, which allows them to marry in days. Even though no love confession has happened yet, it’s clear he’s not just putting on a front for the royal.
In Season 2’s finale episode, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) asks Kate (Simone Ashley) to marry him twice, so they don’t have a traditional proposal, either. The first one that takes place isn’t all that romantic, instead prompted by Anthony’s sense of duty. As she recovers from her horseback riding accident, Anthony informs Kate that he was going to propose after they slept together. Unimpressed, Kate turns him down and reveals her plans to move back to India.
Anthony’s second proposal — though he doesn’t have the ring on him this time — is much more successful. Thanks to some encouragement from her sister, Kate opens her heart to Anthony. He reveals he’s loved her since their first meeting, which is why he wants to marry her. Kate warns him that they’ll vex each other every day, but she accepts. (Cue the literal fireworks.)
Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope’s (Nicola Coughlan) engagement comes about in a much more casual way. Colin proposes at the end of Episode 4 of Season 3, once he finally comes to his senses about his feelings for Penelope. After stopping another suitor from proposing and following Penelope into her carriage, things get steamy. Once they get to their destination, Colin asks, “For God’s sake, Penelope Featherington. Are you going to marry me or not?” before the credits roll. (What a cliffhanger.)
Benedict (Luke Thompson) and Sophie’s (Yerin Ha) story is modeled after a fairy tale, and a fairy tale ending is what they get. Benedict was already going to propose to Sophie, regardless of her lower social standing, but they craftily manage to secure her a place in high society. All their troubles gone, Benedict finally gets to present Sophie with the ring he’s been holding onto, in front of everyone at the Queen’s ball. Swoon.
Before you ask, don’t think we forgot about Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and John (Victor Alli). We would’ve included them, but we don’t see John’s actual proposal, which is honestly very fitting for the low-key couple. They simply announce that they plan to marry to the rest of the Bridgerton family in Episode 6 of Season 3, so we’re only considering the core four proposals so far, for now.
