Harry Styles released his new album, Kiss All the Time, Disco Occasionally, on Friday, March 6, and one song that has a lot of fans talking is the closing track to the record, “Carla’s Song.” The woman’s name is never mentioned in the actual lyrics to the song, which has fans wondering why Styles is dedicating it to her in the title.
The singer spoke with Zane Lowe about the inspiration behind the track in an Apple Music interview on March 5. Not only did he reveal who the titular woman is, but he also explained exactly what happened between him and Carla that inspired him to write the song. Scroll down for everything to know.
Who is Carla in ‘Carla’s Song’?
Carla is one of Harry’s friends. Of their relationship, he said she is “in that group of friends that if I hadn’t said yes to this thing, I wouldn’t have met this person. If I hadn’t met them, I wouldn’t have met these people.”
What is ‘Carla’s Song’ about?
Harry has described “Carla’s Song” as the “most important part of the record to me.” He said it “answered so many questions” for him about why he wants to make music. The song is about “when you heard a song for the first time that made you want to touch music in some way.”
So, where does Carla fit into this? Well, she and Harry were at a friends house “and she kind of mentioned in the room that she’d just discovered Paul Simon.” The discovery came when Carla was “feeling kind of down” and listening to Norah Jones on a playlist, which also featured Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” and Carla became “obsessed” with it.
Harry “grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel all the time,” and played “Bridge Over Troubled Water” for Carla. “Watching her listen to it, having never heard the song, felt like I was just watching someone see something in, like, technicolor or discover magic,” he admitted, adding that the moment reminded him that “by making music you’re investing in songs that go so beyond our lifetime.”
The title “Carla’s Song” came about because Harry also played “Kathy’s Song,” another Simon and Garfunkel track, for Carla.
“Carla’s Song” begins with a reference to “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” with Harry singing, “There’s a bridge over troubled water, if you know then you know, if you don’t, then you don’t.” He then reflects on watching Carla hear that song for the first time, adding, “Saw the light in the gold that you discovered.”
The second verse features the metaphor, “You’ve been a baby sleeping upon a candy bar ’til your eyes open on the changing summer light,” which is Harry’s way of comparing Carla’s reaction to a song to a child trying something sweet for the first time.
Is Harry Styles dating Carla?
No, Harry is not dating Carla. He made it clear that she is a “friend of mine in this group of friends” that he has. There doesn’t appear to have ever been a romantic relationship between them.
Harry is currently dating Zoë Kravitz, whom he was first linked to in August 2025 when a fan caught them walking arm-in-arm in Rome. While they have not publicly spoken about the romance, they have been spotted together multiple times since that first sighting.
