Daryl Hannah has always been notoriously private about her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr., but amid the success of Ryan Murphy‘s new series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, the actress is making rare comments about their time together.
In a scathing new essay for The New York Times, Daryl reflected on her relationship and slammed the show for its portrayal of their romance, which was on-and-off for five years before their 1994 split and John’s eventual romance with Carolyn Bessette.
Daryl, who’s played by Dree Hemingway in the show, began by noting that she generally does not speak out on media coverage about her, “but a recent tragedy-exploiting television series about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette features a character using my name and presents her as me. The choice to portray her as irritating, self-absorbed, whiny, and inappropriate was no accident.”
The actress directly addressed how she’s been portrayed on the show. “[It’s] not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct, or my relationship with John,” she said. “The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue.”
She went on to reference specific scenes from the series, adding, “I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties. I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone’s private memorial. I have never planted any story in the press. I have never compared Jacqueline Onassis’ death to a dog’s. It’s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show. These are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct — and they are false.”
Daryl noted that “real-life consequences” have affected her since Love Story was released. “In the weeks since the since the series aired, I have received many hostile and even threatening messages from viewers who seem to believe the portrayal is factual,” she admitted. “When entertainment borrows a real person’s name, it can permanently impact her reputation.”
She acknowledged her previous silence on the “outrageous lies, crappy stories, and unflattering characterizations” written about her, but said her keeping quiet should not be “mistaken for agreement with the lies.”
Daryl pointed out that the “Kennedy family is also notoriously private” and that she has “always honored their right to privacy.” She made it clear to readers that “most (if not all) of those claiming to have any intimate knowledge of our personal lives are self-serving sensationalists trading in gossip, innuendo, and speculation.”
