We’re headed back to the “Red, White & Royal Blue-niverse,” as Casey McQuiston calls it. The author published their novel about the rivals-to-lovers romance between Prince Henry of Britain and First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz in 2019. Though its success led to a movie adaptation in 2023 — and a movie sequel, which wrapped filming in March 2026 — McQuiston had only said they’d “never say never” to revisiting the couple in a book. Until now.
While McQuiston couldn’t reveal whether or not their current work-in-progress is a direct sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue, they did share that they’re hard at work on something set in the world. “I’m allowed to say that I am working on something Red, White & Royal Blue-related that is literary in nature,” the author told Swooon at BookCon on April 19. “That’s all I can say. Literally all I can say. But there should be more news about that very soon.”
McQuiston has teased a few details about their upcoming works on social media, one of which is a book about “hot lady knights” (Swooon will share more about that soon). In a recent Instagram Story, the author posted a screenshot from their message to their editor: “Also, you will probably notice that this gets quite a bit smuttier than we have before,” they wrote. “I just went for it.”
“Well, it wasn’t the hot lady knights book, although that one’s also very smutty,” McQuiston said when we asked if the comment was related to their upcoming Red, White & Royal Blue project. “Yeah, but it wasn’t that. You know what two plus two is.”
Earlier this year, McQuiston also shared on their social media that they’d lost their notebook on a flight, which they confirmed was filled with Red, White & Royal Blue research. “Yeah, and it’s never coming back,” McQuiston told Swooon. “Listen, if we can all get Delta on the case, but I think it’s long gone. I think it’s in a dumpster somewhere. Hopefully, they recycled it at least. But yeah, that was devastating.”
McQuiston continued, “It was mostly research and a lot of outlines and a lot of notes and a lot of planning, and, yeah, thankfully, I would rather lose that than actual writing. Thankfully, I don’t do a lot of long handwriting, so I didn’t lose a draft. It set me back, like, a week… I was just really mad at myself because I really liked that notebook, and I was emotional. I brought it to [the Red, White & Royal Wedding] set, and I traveled abroad twice with it.”
