In Swooon‘s exclusive preview of Episode 7 of Hope Valley: 1874, the penultimate episode of Season 1, Olivia (Roan Curtis) teaches Alexander (Lachlan Quarmby) how to fish. With only a few lines exchanged by the duo, their romantic tension steals the show.
Right off the bat, Alexander asks Olivia, “So, what’s your secret?” Could he be referring to her positive attitude, her drawing ability, or something else he has grown to admire about her character? It’s clear all that and more races through Olivia’s mind before he clarifies, “To landing a lunker?” That technique is “all about patience and landing the line.”
Once Alexander asks if he is holding the rod correctly, Olivia jumps to his side to reposition his hands. Of course, as she shifts his grip, he cannot take his eyes off her. What follows is a devastating, lingering gaze from both parties. When she asks, “How does that feel?” He can only nod, telling her, “Good.” (Now that’s yearning!)
After that, Olivia places a hand on his shoulder and another on his bicep, helping him cast off. Lingering, once again, long after his line has hit the water, Olivia and Alexander share one more quick glance before she lets go.

Alright, now let’s break that down, because we were blushing for all 53 seconds of that preview. This season, we’ve seen Olivia torn between Clayton (Jedidiah Goodacre), the local blacksmith whom she’s known as a friend for a long time, and Alexander, the Mountie who’s just arrived in town. After Alexander settled a land dispute for the first time during the last episode, the two appear to finally find themselves alone. Who knew a day spent fishing could be such a crucible for romantic tension?
You’ll have to tune in to Episode 7 on Thursday to find out what happens next, but we have a hard time seeing how Clayton can come back from that display of undeniable chemistry.
