Ahead of the Hope Valley: 1874 Season 1 finale, Roan Curtis, Lachlan Quarmby, and Jedidiah Goodacre sat down with Swooon to give a status update on their characters’ gripping love triangle.
Curtis plays Olivia, the Trading Post owner’s daughter who adores her community but yearns to find out what’s beyond the frontier. This season, viewers have watched as Olivia has caught the attention of Constable Alexander Vaughn (Quarmby), one of Canada’s first Mounties, all while her friend Clayton (Goodacre), the local blacksmith, has fostered a crush on her for quite some time. “I think my favorite part [of the fan’s reaction to the season] is that it’s been so divided,” Curtis admitted.
At the start of the season, Curtis had assumed that fans of the original series, When Calls the Heart, would be drawn towards Alexander. “My initial thought was, I know the Hearties love a Mountie,” she explained, “So I kind of assumed that Lachy would have a bit of a headstart in that respect.” That said, she’s been “really stoked” to see how much love viewers have for both guys. As she put it, “There are some hardcore Clayton fans.”

When it comes to Olivia’s perception of the love triangle, it’s clear that Clayton hasn’t always appeared in the same light as Alexander. “I think that she’s always seen Alexander as a romantic option,” she revealed, “because he’s new and there’s not the context of a friendship beforehand.”
Alternatively, “over the course of the season, there’s been a little bit of a slower burn with Clayton,” Curtis explained. “And I think that now, at the end of the season, starting around the point where they’re making that table together, that’s where the tides kind of start to turn. So I think by the end of the season, you’re really seeing it with both of them.”
Of course, viewers know that Clayton has been head over heels for Olivia for a long time. According to Goodacre, he knows that Olivia might see that, but hasn’t felt ready to open up yet. “I think Clayton is just… He’s in love. It’s pretty obvious to everybody. He’s swooning, pun intended, very much over Olivia the entire time. That’s how I played it.”
On the other hand, Alexander did not come into town looking for love. “Alexander is a little bit taken aback by the progression of the love interest he comes into town,” Quarmby shared. “He’s pretty much solely focused on doing his job. He’s going to put all of his attention into that, but then he keeps getting distracted by this lavender vision that’s off in the corner, and it just keeps growing. And he’s kind of like, ‘Okay, that’s getting more and more distracting. We’re gonna have to confront that soon.'”
With only one episode left, we’ll have to wait and see who, if anyone, confronts their feelings during the Hope Valley: 1874 Season 1 finale!
