‘Sweet Magnolias’: Are Ty & Annie Still Together in Season 5?
Ever since it was confirmed that Carson Rowland would not be coming back to Sweet Magnolias for Season 5, fans have been waiting to see what his absence would mean for Ty and Annie’s (Anneliese Judge) relationship. Now that all 10 episodes are officially streaming, we have our answer. (Warning: Spoilers for Sweet Magnolias Season 5 ahead.)
At the end of Season 4, Ty and Annie had a major fight when he asked her to put college on pause to join him in Europe, where he’s pursuing his music career. Annie was livid that her boyfriend, and longtime friend, would ask her to give up her own dreams for him.

Are Ty and Annie still together in Sweet Magnolias Season 5?
No, Ty and Annie are no longer together in Season 5, which picks up right before Annie’s high school graduation, six months after the events of the previous season. It was revealed that Ty had been in Europe since his short trip home to Serenity for Christmas, and that he and Annie were “on-again, off-again” and only texting “on and off” during that period.
Ty skipped coming home for Annie’s spring break and prom, but the nail in the coffin was when he didn’t show up for graduation, and only let her know at the last minute. That’s when Annie decided to end things for good.
When Ty texted Annie “miss you” later in the season, she ignored the message. However, Ty didn’t seem to be ready to give up on communicating with his ex. During Helen’s (Heather Headley) wedding, he FaceTimed her, but she missed it because she was on the dance floor with another guy. (More on that below.)
Sweet Magnolias hasn’t gotten a renewal for Season 6 yet, but if the show does come back, the show will have to answer how Annie handles that missed call. It’s unclear whether or not Rowland will return if the show is renewed, but the Season 5 finale left the door open for both possibilities.
Why did Ty and Annie break up in Sweet Magnolias?
In a conversation with Ty’s mom, Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Annie revealed that she was breaking up with Ty because “he’s not being fair to me or you or anyone here.” She added, “I just texted him to thank him for the flowers and tell him I’m done.”
Annie needed someone who was going to be able to be there for her both physically and emotionally, and Ty clearly wasn’t that person. Ty’s bandmate Olivia (Tommi Rose) was able to give Annie some insight into what Ty had been up to, telling her, “We fell in with these local musicians in Copenhagen. Well, he fell in, actually. Sidelined me. And then every time I suggested coming home, something would come up with Ty. But I stayed until it became very clear that he wanted to stay way more than he wanted to come home.”
Despite the breakup, Swisher told Swooon she thinks “Annie very much loves Ty.” However, she noted that she’s excited for viewers to be able to root for Annie in a new way this season.
“She’s only really had one boyfriend, and that’s Ty, and that first love may be her greatest love, and that’s the beauty of what life is,” Swisher shared. “But to be able to see how she sort of interacts and bumps up against other people, I think it’s just great storytelling. I hope people can kind of give her that time to explore.”
Who does Annie end up with in Sweet Magnolias Season 5?
Annie didn’t end Season 5 in a relationship, but she did have a happy ending with Noah (Aidan Merwarth), the grandson of the Whartons, who was visiting for the summer. Annie and Noah connected throughout the season, but she was also seeing Blake (Austin Woods), so they initially never crossed a line past friendship.

Annie went into the summer wanting to have fun, and Blake was the perfect person for that. However, she eventually realized that she wanted something deeper and more serious, which Blake admittedly wasn’t ready for. They ended things amicably, and Annie then turned her attention to Noah, with whom she had a more meaningful connection.
Noah and Annie eventually shared a first kiss and spent time together at Helen’s wedding, where he told her, “No man worth his salt would tell you what to do. Chart your own course. Fly to where you’ll be fed.” After the argument she had with Ty in Season 4, this was just what Annie needed to hear.
However, with Annie heading to college and Noah leaving town at the end of summer, it’s unclear whether there’s a future for them beyond a summer romance.
