This season of 90 Day Fiancé, viewers have gotten to know Marissa Rubinetti, a Kleinfeld executive based in Pennsylvania, and Edward Gomez, a hotel entertainment worker from the Dominican Republic. A clear example of how opposites attract, the Season 12 couple has sparked a lot of attention from curious viewers about how their relationship came to be. Luckily, Marissa sat down with Swooon to set the record straight.
On the show, Marissa revealed that she met Edward while on a girls’ trip in the Dominican Republic, they lost touch, and then she reconnected with him on another trip years later. Diving deeper into that story about the first time that they met, she told Swooon, “He was working at a karaoke bar in the hotel that I was staying in.”
At the time, Marissa was “newly divorced” from the father of her kids, visiting the DR on a vacation with her friends. She explained, at the bar, “We had a little bit of, like, an eye connection, and we finally met.” Then, she went up onstage to sing her karaoke number: “Walk Like an Egyptian.” She laughed, recalling her choice, “Don’t ask why, but I think that song is so fun.”
While that was the first time they crossed paths, Marissa made it clear that “nothing happened on that trip,” she explained, “I think I might have seen him a few days later at the resort, [but] we knew that there was something brewing between us.”
While they exchanged numbers, they lost touch after a few months. “I never forgot about him,” Marissa confessed, “Because after my tumultuous marriage, what Edward evoked inside of me… He made me feel like a woman again. He made me feel special. He made me feel beautiful. So I never forgot about him because he was the first man after my marriage that made me feel that way.”

In 2023, Marissa reconnected with Edward on — you guessed it — another girls’ trip to the Dominican Republic. Planning her trip, Marissa wondered if Edward was still in the area. She texted him and “long story short, we ended up deciding to meet for our first date, when I went back to Punta Cana.”
It was on that date that their relationship really started. Marissa looked back on their first date, sharing, “That’s when we had our first kiss, and that’s when the electricity exploded.” She recalled, “We knew that there was something really strong between us.”
After that trip, she explained, “We never really lost touch with each other.” What followed was an entire month of FaceTimes, where they got to know each other “emotionally and mentally,” before Marissa returned to the DR for a solo trip. As she put it, “That’s when we fell in love.”
