7 Best ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Weddings, Ranked

Camilla Luddington and Chris Carmack; Katherine Heigl and Justin Chambers; Chandra Wilson and Jason George on 'Grey's Anatomy'
Disney / Anne Marie Fox / Scott Garfield / ABC / Everett Collection

The Grey Sloan doctors are often running around the hospital saving lives, but they always make time for love. Since the very first episode of the ABC medical drama, matters of the heart have been on the operating table.

Many of these Grey’s Anatomy love stories have led to incredible (and often dramatic) weddings, while others have been more low-key affairs. All Grey’s Anatomy couples have their unique vibe, and no celebration of love on this show has been the same.

From the iconic Post-It wedding to the Runaway Bride nuptials to Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Link (Chris Carmack) finally saying “I do,” love has always been just what the doctor ordered on this show. In honor of JoLink’s recent wedding, Swooon has selected the seven best Grey’s Anatomy weddings throughout the show’s 21 seasons. Let us know your favorite Grey’s Anatomy wedding in the comments below.

7. Jo & Link

Jo and Link’s Season 21 nuptials were just so sweet. After two decades, Grey’s Anatomy still managed to pull a first with the JoLink wedding. Link brought out his guitar to sing his wedding vows! (This man defines golden retriever energy.) Since this “I do” moment is so fresh in the Grey’s Anatomy universe, we have to acknowledge it, but time will tell if their place on this ranking changes. I was never a fan of Jo and Alex’s wedding, so it was a treat to see Jo get this happy ending.

6. Arizona & Callie

Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona’s (Jessica Capshaw) relationship went through so many ups and downs over the years, but no one can deny the power of the Calzona wedding. When all the complication and drama was stripped away, the love between Callie and Arizona remained. So much about this wedding still makes me emotional, from a nervous Bailey (Chandra Wilson), who officiated, to Mark (Eric Dane) walking Callie down the aisle.

ABC

5. Richard & Catherine

Similar to the MerDer wedding (more on that later), Catherine (Debbie Allen) and Richard’s (James Pickens Jr.) nuptials were perfectly them. It was about time someone put that hospital chapel to good use! They celebrated their love in the center of their universe, the place where they built their lives, the place they both call home: the hospital. For two doctors, that’s romance.

4. Bailey & Ben

Bailey’s never sought out the spotlight, so it was such a joy to see her take center stage when she married Ben (Jason George). These two have built such a loving and protective partnership. This wedding was just icing on the cake. Also, in true Grey’s Anatomy fashion, there was a bit of heartbreak involved. One of the happiest days of Bailey’s life turned out to be one of the most devastating days for Richard. Adele (Loretta Devine) died after surgery, but Richard still showed up to support Bailey on her big day. The moment when Richard looked at the dance floor and envisioned him and Adele dancing together on their wedding day will never not make me cry.

Patrick Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo in 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 5
Scott Garfield / ABC / Everett Collection

3. Meredith & Derek

Most TV shows would have made a grand showcase of the Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) wedding, and I’m so glad they didn’t. The Post-It wedding was so perfectly MerDer. They didn’t need the flowers, the church, or the wedding dress. They just needed each other. Also, the fact they were able to get so much on just one Post-It note was impressive.

Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew in 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 10
ABC

2. Jackson & April

A bold choice for #2, but here we are. April (Sarah Drew) was actually getting married to Matthew (Justin Bruening), but Jackson (Jesse Williams) threw a Hail Mary before it was too late. In the middle of the ceremony, Jackson stood up and declared his love for April. Messy? Yes. Romantic? Absolutely. The cover of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” alone! Those words were all April needed to hear, and she ran off with Jackson, Runaway Bride style. The sheer joy on April’s face as she left the barn with Jackson was proof these two could never keep their love in the dark.

1. Izzie & Alex

The wedding of all Grey’s Anatomy weddings. Everything came together so perfectly for Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and Alex’s (Justin Chambers) nuptials, even if the circumstances surrounding the wedding weren’t. Who could forget when Izzie stumbled while walking down the aisle, only to have George (T.R. Knight) sweep in to assist her? Looking back at Alex’s journey, it was clear from this moment that Izzie was it for him. This was truly the only wedding the original five were all there for, and it will remain in a class of its own.
