Masquerade Ball Meet-Cute (Episode 1)
Resistant to his mother’s wish that he participate in society, Benedict is less than thrilled to be attending the masquerade ball that sets the stage for his meet-cute with the Lady in Silver, who is actually maid Sophie Baek in disguise. In true Cinderella fashion, Sophie captures Benedict’s interest almost immediately, and after a dance lesson in his family’s garden, it is a done deal for him, but her secret identity keeps their love-at-first-sight experience contained to a single night, much to both of their disappointment.

Cavender House Reunion (Episode 2)
When Sophie and Benedict finally reunite, after months of him searching for the Lady in Silver, it’s at Cavender House amidst a drunken party where she is serving as a maid. When the man of the house makes a move to harm Sophie, Benedict, still ailing from a bender, steps in and gets into a physical fight to get Cavender away from her. While Benedict’s heroic actions are perceived through Sophie’s eyes as a knight-in-shining-armor moment, his lack of recognition quickly shifts the happy moment into heartbreak as she remembers he doesn’t know she’s his Lady in Silver.

Opting to seek shelter at his country estate, humbly titled My Cottage, the pair takes refuge as he recovers from injuries sustained in the fight. During their time at My Cottage, Benedict and Sophie grow closer, their undeniable bond established at the masquerade bubbling to the surface. Sharing a kiss by the lake, they are forced to reconcile with the realities of their differing backgrounds and choose to put the moment behind them.

Staircase Offer (Episode 4)
Returning to the Ton, Benedict finds Sophie employment at Bridgerton House, and while the arrangement works in a sense, the proximity only ramps up the romantic tension simmering under the surface at all times. When Benedict realizes that chasing after the reality of Sophie is more desirable than the fantasy of the Lady in Silver, he seeks her out at Bridgerton House. Running into each other in the servant’s stairwell, their passion ignites in a steamy moment, leading to Benedict’s shocking offer: “Be my mistress.” This is a definitive low point in their relationship as Sophie struggles to cope with her own identity as a daughter of a nobleman and maid herself.

Benedict's Love Confession (Episode 5)
While Benedict awaits an answer from Sophie regarding his offer, she ultimately resists and explains it’s one of the worst things he could ask her. Desperate to fix their loss in translation moment, Benedict receives advice to just share how he truly feels, and when Sophie learns distressing news about her stepmother, Araminta (Katie Leung), she takes off upstairs, and Benedict follows. While he tries to comfort her, she confronts him and says his inability to stay away from her hurts her because she knows she can’t be with him. This leads Benedict to get candid and admit that he loves her, leading to the consummation of their relationship.
“When she hears the word love, I think that holds so much weight for her,” Ha explains to Swooon. “It is something that she has craved for her entire life.”

Benedict's Coming Out (Episode 6)
As Benedict and Sophie work through their predicament, she worries about being pregnant, but he reassures her that he will take care of her and any child they might potentially have. Benedict goes so far as to make arrangements at My Cottage to have them move there, willing to sacrifice the tight-knit connection he has with his family for her. Further proving his commitment to Sophie, Benedict discloses his past relationships with both men and women, to which she responds, “Love is always a thing to be proud of.”
Thompson tells Swooon, “We’ve had lots of stories about repression and the angst of repression and sexuality, but I do think Benedict is striking as a male character in that sex seems to be just something that’s undefined about him, and I don’t think that bothers him.”
