Rebecca Herbst has played the beloved Elizabeth “Liz” Webber on General Hospital for nearly three decades. When the actress joined the soap in 1997, she was part of the next generation of GH stars. Viewers quickly rallied around Lucky Spencer’s (Jonathan Jackson) love story with Liz, which became the crème de la crème of a new era of soap supercouples.

Through the years, Elizabeth has opened her heart to many men beyond Lucky. From her romance with Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) to her affair with Lucky’s brother, Nikolas Cassadine (Tyler Christopher), to a recent love like Michael Easton‘s Hamilton Finn, Elizabeth has never been afraid to love and love hard.

With Jackson set to leave Port Charles once again, Swooon decided it was time to revisit Elizabeth’s best romances on General Hospital. Did first love conquer this ranking, or did another pairing take the top spot? Scroll down to find out, and let us know if you agree with our ranking in the comments below.

7. Ric & Elizabeth

Look, I’m aware of the Liric shippers out there, but there’s no moving past what Ric (Rick Hearst) did to Elizabeth. There’s only one person who lives in Ric’s mind rent-free, and it’s Sonny (Maurice Benard).

Sure, Rick Hearst and Rebecca Herbst have great chemistry, but he held Carly (then Tamara Braun) captive in a panic room in the house he lived in with Elizabeth! He also fed an unknowing Elizabeth birth control pills, which caused her to have an embolism! Ric was (and still is) a notorious liar throughout their relationship. Elizabeth didn’t deserve any of the pain he caused her. Thank goodness she never had his kid, otherwise she would have been chained to him for life (pun intended).

6. Finn & Elizabeth

Finn and Elizabeth just never did it for me. Their romance was just lackluster and fell short of Elizabeth’s other great loves. Michael Easton and Rebecca Herbst’s chemistry was misaligned. They’re both tremendous actors, but the vibes weren’t vibing here. Finn was merely a blip on the Elizabeth romance radar.

5. Zander & Elizabeth

Zander (Chad Brannon) and Elizabeth were never going to be a great love story, and they knew it. Their hearts belonged to other people. They were both in rebound mode, but I couldn’t help but be drawn to the “good girl is attracted to the bad boy” energy. Zander and Elizabeth had some memorable moments, notably getting stuck in the crypt together and their Halloween hookup. Seriously, it was downright hot when Zander said to Liz, “I’m not looking for you to fall in love with me.” These two clearly didn’t last (Zander is dead), but they are connected forever through their son, Cameron Webber.

4. Nikolas & Elizabeth

Elizabeth messed up with this one. An affair with Lucky’s brother? Of all people? Come on now. While I love a forbidden romance, Nikolas and Elizabeth’s short-lived rendezvous felt so out of character for her. They always just gave off the most platonic energy. This affair wasn’t worth the pain it caused.

Roger Howarth and Rebecca Herbst as Franco and Liz on 'General Hospital'
ABC / Todd Wawrychuk

3. Franco & Elizabeth

Franco Baldwin had quite the journey in Port Charles. There was his homicidal behavior, which was caused by a brain tumor. Once that medical mystery was solved, Franco had the ultimate personality transformation — and Roger Howarth pulled it off flawlessly. Howarth and Herbst had such an effortless chemistry. They found each other at just the right time. Franco was an amazing partner for Elizabeth in every way and helped her create the family unit she’d always wanted. He also adored her. (Men, listen up!) Elizabeth’s entire life has been in service to others, so it was wonderful to see someone truly put her first. Unfortunately, their love story was cut short when Franco was murdered by Peter August.

2. Liz & Lucky

Hot take! Elizabeth and Lucky have an epic love story, don’t get me wrong. But when you look at their romance as a whole, the recent chapters have pulled them out of the top spot. Lucky and Elizabeth just haven’t spent that much time together. When they do, it’s magic, but Lucky is a Spencer through and through. He’s a nomad, always on the pulse of his next adventure, and Elizabeth’s never been that girl. She loves the stability of Port Charles. The love they shared as young adults is still there, but they are different people now. Unless Lucky comes back to Port Charles for good down the road, Elizabeth deserves a man she never has to worry about wanting to leave on a whim.

1. Elizabeth & Jason

The ultimate opposites attract romance. Liason fans, I hear you! The amazing thing about Elizabeth and Jason is that their love story has yet to be told. Elizabeth and Jason have been in each other’s lives for decades, and there was a moment in time when they were romantically involved, but they were ships passing in the night. Every obstacle was thrown their way, which diverted their paths away from each other. However, a one night stand led to their son, Jake, and Jason was willing to keep the paternity a secret to protect Jake from his dangerous lifestyle. (That didn’t happen.)

Elizabeth and Jason have fallen in love with other people over the years, but their love story feels so unfinished (or unwritten, perhaps). The timing just wasn’t right two decades ago. With Jason back, now seems like the right time to crack Liason wide open. Their coupling already allowed them to reach supercouples status. It’s time to reunite Liaison and give them the long-awaited, fully-fledged romance their characters deserve.
