7 ‘Gilmore Girls’ Romance Twists We’d Like to See in Future Spinoff

Do we like Gilmore Girls? Only with our oxygen.

While we love a Gilmore Girls rewatch (we’ve done at least 1000 at this point), we know we’re not alone in yearning for more content. With the 25th anniversary of Gilmore Girls and the 10th anniversary of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on the horizon, fans are convinced another revival is on its way. After all, there’s no way Rory could announce that she’s pregnant and then leave us forever. At least… We hope not.

According to Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, she would “never say never” to another revival (or spinoff of the first revival) because the creative team “didn’t actually intend to do the [revival] for Netflix.” How did it start? She told TV Insider: “We all got together for a panel and we went to a bar afterwards. We all thought, ‘Well, this was fun! Let’s just do it again!” Now, we’re ready for them to come to the same conclusion and decide it’s time for a third visit to Stars Hollow.

If Gilmore Girls comes back with another season of A Year in the Life, a new spinoff, or even a Christmas special as Lorelai actress Lauren Graham proposed, the only question is: What will it be about? From finally finding out who Rory’s baby daddy is to getting justice for Lane Kim, we’ve thought up seven of the biggest relationship twists we’d love to see in the next Gilmore Girls chapter.

1. Jess finds his happy ending—and it's not with Rory.

Ah, Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia). We will always be grateful for your delivery of “WHY did you DROP out of YALE?” but you and Rory (Alexis Bledel) will not be endgame.

Within the Gilmore Girls community, there’s a theory that Chilton Rory was too good for Stars Hollow Jess, and Author Jess was too good for Yale Rory. For us, the unbecoming of Rory Gilmore that was Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life only goes to prove that while we would love to see Rory and Jess end up together, they will forever fall into the “right person, wrong time” category.

Trust us, this is a good thing. We’d love to see adult Jess find love with a newcomer to Stars Hollow. This could be a new employee at Luke’s Diner, someone staying at the Dragonfly Inn, or anything in between. All that matters is that Jess will finally get the amount of love he has proven he can give.

2. Rory's baby daddy is the Wookie.

Sorry, not sorry, but we are so done with Logan Huntzberger. We adore Matt Czuchry, and he definitely has a place in our revival. However, if we have anything to say about it, he will not be Rory’s baby daddy.

Following nearly a decade of waiting to find out who Rory’s baby daddy is, we’re holding out hope that it’s the man dressed as a Wookie, whom Rory hooked up with after meeting him while researching long lines. While many fans have pointed out that, logistically, it would not be possible for the Wookie to be the father, we’re convinced that we have found a loophole.

Rory spends the majority of A Year in the Life forgetting that she is in a relationship (of two years!!) with Paul. To us, this indicates that she isn’t the most reliable narrator when it comes to her love life. If the writers wanted, Rory and the Wookie could easily have stayed in touch and made their one-night stand into a sneaky links situation.

That being said, if Logan is Rory’s baby daddy, we hope the life-changing news will (at least) cause him to finally stop cheating on his fiancée, Odette. Whether he stays with Odette, officially gets back together with Rory, or takes on a Christopher-style approach to fatherhood, all that we can ask is that he makes a decision and sticks with it.

3. Kirk and Lulu go on Four Weddings.

If there’s one thing Kirk (Sean Gunn) and Lulu (Rini Bell) are going to do, it’s match each other’s freak. One thing we’re dying to see in the next Gilmore Girls revival is Kirk and Lulu finally getting hitched. Let’s be clear, this is not because we think all long-term couples need to get married. Instead, we want to see Kirk and Lulu get married because we know that their wedding would be THE event of the century.

That’s why we’re pitching a Netflix x TLC crossover, in which Lulu is a contestant on Four Weddings, the unhinged reality competition that sends four brides to each other’s weddings and has them vote on who’s event was the best. With Kirk at the end of the aisle, we know their wedding would be a shoo-in to win the episode and go viral along the way.

4. Sookie and Jackson are a central relationship.

Consider this our humble plea for Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) and Jackson (Jackson Douglas) to return to the Gilmore Girls universe as a central couple.

Due to scheduling conflicts, McCarthy was only able to reprise her role with a cameo in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. In another revival, we’d love to see Sookie and Jackson’s relationship take center stage, because we have plenty of questions about what they’re up to. Namely, we’d love to find out the name of their third baby.

Bringing back Sookie and Jackson’s family would also be a fantastic route to a new story of first love. After all, at this point, Davey and Martha are both young adults. What if one of them is about to fall in love and have their own “Basket. Basket maker. Guy who didn’t bring enough money” moment?

5. Lane and Zack get a divorce, but they're fantastic coparents.

If there’s one thing every Gilmore Girls fan agrees on, it’s that Lane Kim (Keiko Agena) deserved better. We tolerated watching as her perfect match, Dave Regalski (Adam Brody), left the show. Life happens, that’s fine. However, many fans did not love seeing Lane marry her other Hep Alien bandmate, Zack Van Gerbig (Todd Lowe). Nor did they love watching her get pregnant the first time she ever had sex (with twins, nonetheless).

It’s not that we don’t like Zack; we just think that most of the time, he’s the physical embodiment of the bare minimum. Since fans have always thought Lane could do better, we’ve taken matters into our own hands. In our dream revival, Lane and Zack come to the mutual decision that they’re better apart. While they are both incredibly involved in their children’s lives and their band, this separation would give Lane the much-needed opportunity to get swept up into the love story we all know she deserved in the first place.

6. Paris finally gets her queer romance.

Ever since the first season of Gilmore Girls, fans have been convinced that Paris Gellar (Liza Weil) is queer-coded, and we have to say, we completely agree. It’s always been clear that Paris wants to be in a relationship, so for the third iteration of Gilmore Girls, we’re hoping that Paris finds love again.

During A Year in the Life, Gilmore Girls finally addressed Yanic Truesdale’s character Michel’s sexuality by giving him a husband in the revival. Now, LGBTQIA+ fans who have consistently felt represented by Paris’ character are arguing that it’s time for the writers to further explore her sexuality. Whether she ends up with a man, woman, or someone beyond binary, it’s about time Paris gets her happy ending.

7. Rory ends up with Tristan.

When it comes to second chances, Rory has had her share. Gilmore Girls fans consistently argue over who she should end up with: Jess, Logan, or Dean. However, we’ve noticed that there is one character who’s often left out of the debate. That’s why we’re convinced the most shocking ending for Rory would be ending up with Tristin Dugray (Chad Michael Murray). No, this isn’t because we’re dying to see CMM back on Gilmore Girls (though that is definitely a factor). We simply feel like, out of all of her previous love interests, Rory and Tristin have the most unfinished business.

Picture this: Rory is walking the halls of Chilton before an alumni event when she hears something along the lines of “Hey Mary, long time no see.” Spending the day attached at the hip, Rory and Tristin learn that they have grown far more similar during their years apart. They find themselves on the stage, reminiscing about their ill-fated Romeo and Juliet performance, walk through the scene, and share the kiss they would have had on stage all those years ago. The rest, as they say, is history.
