Maintaining a relationship in The Boys‘ universe is nothing short of a superheroic feat. Half of the characters are too morally ambiguous — or downright immoral — to have a bona fide romance. The other half are constantly driven apart by deadly threats. Quite a few The Boys love stories have ended tragically, naturally. But going into Season 5, several couples are still going strong (or as strong as they can be amidst a Supe government coup).
For one, OG couple Hughie (Jack Quaid) and Annie (Erin Moriarty) hit a rough patch toward the end of Season 4, while Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and Frenchie’s (Tomer Capone) romance finally ignited after seasons of slow burn. Swooon is breaking down where every romance (or including the weird, not-quite ones) stands ahead of The Boys’ fifth and final season. Tell us which couples you think will survive Season 5 in the comments below!

Hughie & Annie
Hughie and Annie haven’t had an easy run of it since their romance began in Season 1. It was on-again, off-again until Season 3, when they became a stable couple (or as stable as any couple can be on The Boys). They even reconciled after Annie found out Hughie was taking temporary Compound V.
Hughie and Annie remained together in Season 4, but again, faced a number of hurdles. The most major came toward the end of the season, when a shapeshifter took on Annie’s form, kidnapped Annie, and infiltrated the Boys. Before clocking that Annie wasn’t herself, Hughie slept with and got engaged to The Shifter. Annie manages to get over it — as long as Hughie gets tested for every STI known to man — but they’re separated again. Going into Season 5, Hughie has been taken into Vought custody.

Kimiko & Frenchie
For several seasons, Kimiko and Frenchie have shared one of the closest bonds on the show. They kissed for the first time in Season 3, though they decided to remain friends. But at long, long last, they got together in the Season 4 finale. Kimiko revealed that she was lying when she told Frenchie he should be with Colin (Elliot Knight). She thought Frenchie deserved to be with someone better. “Mon coeur, there is no one better than you,” Frenchie responded before Kimiko kissed him. Peak romance!
But, like Annie and Hughie, they were driven apart a short while later. Gen V‘s Cate (Maddie Phillips) brainwashes Frenchie. Kimiko was held back by Sam (Asa Germann) as Frenchie walked away. As her love was taken from her, Kimiko said her heartbreaking first word: “No.”

MM & Monique
When MM (Laz Alonso) rejoined the Boys in Season 1, his then-wife Monique (Frances Turner) struggled to see eye-to-eye with him, since he was risking their daughter’s safety. Monique divorced MM and started dating Todd (Matthew Gorman), who later became a Homelander fanboy and died.
As the fight with the Supes ramped up in Season 4, MM sent his wife and daughter away to protect him, sharing one last kiss with his ex before they go. MM was also taken in by Vought, so we’ll have to wait and see if he manages to survive and reunite with his family in Season 5.

Sister Sage & the Deep
It’s a stretch to call whatever was going on between the Deep (Chace Crawford) and Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) a romance, but we’ll include it anyway. Deep and Sage had a transactional relationship in Season 4: She asked Deep to lobotomize her regenerating brain, dumbing her down so they could hook up. She got control of America alongside Homelander (Anthony Starr) in the Season 4 finale, so she’ll likely be too focused on executing Phase 2 of her plan to restart her situationship with Deep in Season 5. But we’ll see!

The Deep & Ambrosius
Season 4 gave Deep yet another wacky (to put it generously) relationship. He kept an octopus, Ambrosius (voiced by Tilda Swinton), hidden in his closet. She was his secret lover before she made the mistake of confronting Deep about his affair with Sage. Deep descended into a fit of rage, breaking Ambrosius’ tank and causing her to suffocate. In the finale, Deep’s mind wandered back to Ambrosius, so he’ll likely still be grieving her in Season 5.
