FirstPrince’s love story is just beginning. Prime Video has confirmed that Red, White & Royal Blue 2 is now officially titled Red, White & Royal Wedding. Cue the screams!

“Everybody is super excited to reprise their roles,” author Casey McQuiston, who wrote the book that the first movie is based on, told Swooon just days ahead of the reveal. “I think a lot of them really formed these amazing bonds the first time around and are just excited to see each other again.”

The romantic comedy will continue the love story between Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the First Son of the United States, and Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) of Great Britain. In the first movie, they went from enemies to lovers while trying to keep their relationship out of the spotlight. By the end of the first film, the happy couple’s relationship is no longer a secret, and considering the title, it’s safe to assume they’re headed down the aisle in the sequel.

When is Red, White & Royal Wedding coming out?

Though Prime Video officially greenlit the sequel on October 15, the movie is still in development. Filming has yet to begin, as far as we know.

That’s not to say no progress has been made. At an August 14 event, McQuiston told fans that “pencils are kind of down for now” on the sequel. “I don’t know who needs to hear this, but ‘pencils down’ is a figure of speech that refers to when you’re taking the SAT or something and it’s time to put your pencil down bc the section of the test is done,” McQuiston wrote on their Instagram Story. “I’ve used this expression, like 100,000 times to describe the feeling of turning in a manuscript, it’s not that deep!”

That update came after Prime Video released teaser art for the sequel with the tagline, “Fancy another slice?” in May 2024. The art featured a cake, a callback to Alex and Henry’s infamous cake-tastrophe, with a “2” candle and the flags of the United States and Great Britain. Will Alex and Henry somehow crash into their own wedding cake in the sequel, rather than someone else’s? Only time will tell.

Sarah Shahi, who played the president’s right-hand woman in the first movie, spoke about the follow-up movie in September 2025. “It’s happening. There’s more stuff regarding Red, White & Royal Blue that’s coming down the pipeline as well,” she said on the Emmys red carpet. “I’m going to tease that. It’s very exciting. Fans will be happy.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress added that “[the sequel] is happening and then some.” Does that mean a trilogy could be in the cards? We need more details, STAT!

Who is in the Red, White & Royal Wedding cast?

Perez and Galitzine will return as Alex and Henry in the Red, White & Royal Wedding, as well as Shahi. Prime Video has not announced whether or not cast members Uma Thurman, Rachel Hilson, Ellie Bamber, and Clifton Collins Jr. will also reprise their roles.

Who is making Red, White & Royal Wedding?

McQuiston and Matthew López have teamed up to write the script for the sequel. They announced the sequel together at a special screening in California in May 2024 ahead of Amazon’s inaugural upfront presentation. López directed and wrote the screenplay for the first film.

Along with the movie’s new title, it was announced that Jamie Babbit, who’s known for the LGBTQ+ rom-com But I’m a Cheerleader, has signed on to direct. “After directing But I’m a Cheerleader in my twenties, I’m thrilled to be back in the queer love universe of Red, White & Royal Wedding,” Babbit said in a statement. “We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy and gay joy. I’m thrilled to work with this brilliant team.”

McQuiston shared their input on the film’s new director: “I’m so grateful to Matthew for all his hard work on the first movie and in co-creating this new story with me, and I know that Jamie has the vision, wit, and tenderness to take great care of Alex and Henry from here.”

Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Schechter Films are returning to produce alongside Michael McGrath, López, and McQuiston.

“What a dream to be able to return to the world of Red, White & Royal Blue,” Berlanti and Schechter said. “There is no filmmaker better suited to direct this film than Jamie Babbit. Her decades of championing Queer stories and her track record of delivering smart, funny, heartwarming films and television gives us great confidence. … More than anyone, we want to thank the fans whose passion fueled this sequel. We are fans too and can’t wait to see Nick and Taylor as Henry and Alex together again.”

What will Red, White & Royal Wedding be about?

McQuiston didn’t publish a sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue, but they did release a bonus chapter that was part of the collector’s edition of the book. The chapter is told through Henry’s perspective and takes place several years after the events of Red, White & Royal Blue. Alex and Henry are engaged and plan to marry. They live in a Brooklyn brownstone that Henry bought after he abdicated from his role within the royal family. By the end of the chapter, the couple has decided to move to Austin, Alex’s hometown.

The sequel will likely draw inspiration from this extra chapter and also explore uncharted territory with Alex and Henry. The plot of the sequel movie is being kept under wraps, though it’s not a stretch to assume Alex and Henry’s wedding is central to the story.

McQuiston told Swooon that as they were creating the script with López, they considered what the book version of the couple’s story would look like. “Of course, I was thinking about, ‘What do I see in the future for the characters in the movie, but of course, then I’m always thinking, ‘How would this be different for the characters in the books?’ So I think a lot about what the future would hold for Alex and Henry of the book. And so for that reason, I don’t think I’ll ever say ‘never’ to a book sequel.”
