Ben Mezzenga has an unlikely supporter in his corner: Whoopi Goldberg.

The controversial Love Is Blind Season 8 contestant experienced a viral moment after the finale was released on March 7. Standing at the altar, his fiancée, Sara Carton promptly said “I don’t” when the official question was asked. Their misalignment on politics and more overpowered Carton’s feelings for Mezzenga.

Discussing this matter on The Viewthe hosts all had different opinions about the situation. Goldberg’s main concern was Carton’s timing to call their wedding off. “But then why wait? Why do it in front of [everyone]?” she asked.

Jumping in to explain the premise of Love Is Blind, Sara Haines emphasized, “They’re forced to do it that way” as that’s “the setup of the show.” Goldberg, however, stuck to her original opinion and continued, “I think what bothered me when I saw the clip is not that he, you know — there’s a lot of people who politics is not their thing. It’s just not their thing.” She added, “But to wait until the wedding day…” Fellow cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin agreed with The Sister Act alum. She mentioned that it felt “a little cruel.”

Others at the table countered that way of thinking. “You can’t marry somebody like that,” Sunny Hostin strongly exclaimed, while Joy Behar joked, “You need somebody informed, otherwise you might as well marry Marjorie Taylor Greene.” The comedian further added that “uninformed women” will be calling him up.

Goldberg still professed sympathy for Mezzenga. “It did feel cruel because she could’ve said, ‘No, I’m not gonna marry you, and here’s why.’ And they could’ve had the fight there,” Goldberg admitted. “But they did it in so public a way.”

Yet, to Behar, anyone signing up for Love Is Blind is “asking for trouble,” which makes it fair game to critique them. Goldberg didn’t agree. “No, I’m not worried about him, but I don’t like seeing folks get embarrassed like that,” she said.
