The Summer I Turned Pretty will officially return for Season 3 in July, but while some fans, particularly readers of Jenny Han‘s third book from the trilogy, may think they know what’s coming, the author is promising they don’t.

If the series is to follow the book’s endgame, Belly winds up with Conrad, but that doesn’t mean the show will necessarily follow suit. Han is now hinting that the endgame readers might be expecting from We’ll Always Have Summer could be very different from what we see onscreen.

“There are going to be surprises,” Han told EW in a new Season 3 tease. “There are the things that they know and then there are things they think they know, and then there’s going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them.”

As viewers of the Prime Video series know by now, The Summer I Turned Pretty tells the story of Belly Conklin (Lola Tung), a young woman who is caught between her love for Fisher brothers, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Tracking their summers spent at the Fisher family’s Cousins Beach house, Belly’s heart belonged to Conrad growing up, but Season 2 saw her shift focus to Jeremiah, leading fans to wonder, who will she pick?

“The one thing I’ve always admired about Jenny is that every season and every decision about what’s coming next is purely to serve the story,” Tung told EW. “She’s never going to do anything that doesn’t make sense for the story. It’s all about this beautiful world she’s created and giving the fans something really, really special and giving us something really special to work with.”

Season 3 will feature a time jump as the story picks up two years into Belly and Jeremiah’s relationship, which Han teased is “very sweet and there’s so many amazing scenes for Belly and Jeremiah this season.” She added, “Lola and Gavin have really great chemistry and got into such a good rhythm with each other, because we do have a little bit of a time jump going into season 3, so they needed to have that kind of bond, and it was really seamless. It’ll be joyful for people to witness it.”

But that doesn’t mean Conrad’s out of the picture either; he’s been away at school studying to become a doctor, and now he’s showing back up in their lives. “It’s almost like rediscovering and also seeing the ways that they’ve both changed and have had some distance from each other, and who are these people now?” Han noted.

While Han and Tung didn’t offer an insight into Belly’s endgame, there’s certainly a lot for the Jellyfish and Bonrad fans alike to look forward to. Stay tuned for more, and let us know what you think of Han’s Season 3 tease about the surprise ending in the comments section below.
