Why There’s No Romance on ‘The Pitt’ — Will That Change in Season 2?

Most medical dramas, in addition to the medicine and patients, include a somewhat heavy focus on the doctors and nurses’ personal lives, including romances among the staff. But not The Pitt (just one of many reasons why this is the best show of the year). And based on what executive producer and writer R. Scott Gemmill says, that’s going to continue.

“If you’ve ever been in an ER, it’s not maybe the most romantic place you’d go for a hookup. You’d have to be in a real certain state, I think,” he tells TV Insider. “It was a byproduct of what the show is essentially. It’s all set in the ER, and it takes place over 15 hours. So how much can you do within that 15 hours in terms of say, Javadi [Shabana Azeez] meeting somebody or somebody new? It takes usually more than a 15-hour workday to create a relationship. So, we may hint at things moving forward, but we’re not going to find anyone having sex in a broom closet any time soon.”

Speaking of hints, Shawn Hatosy says that Abbot telling Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) that he had her do a procedure too risky to do himself and to take the win was him flirting with her in Episode 14.

“I think he’s kind of, in his own weird and ‘I’m not trying to be creepy’ way, flirting in the only way that he can. I think he actually has a ton of respect for Dr. Mohan,” he explains. “There was a scene — I’m not sure if it made it, I don’t think it did — in the first episode where somebody says something about her, and he comes out and says, ‘She’s the smartest one here.’ And I think he has such respect for her. So like I said, I think it was his way of just kinda trying to keep it warm there with her.”

We did hear, over the course of the first season, about Robby’s (Noah Wyle) past relationships, including with the mother (Sarah Jane Morris) of his stepson Jake (Taj Speights) and fellow ER doc Collins (Tracy Ifeachor). In Episode 11, he even found out that the latter had been pregnant when they were together but hadn’t been ready to be a mother. Gemmill confirms that they’ve been talking about what to explore when it comes to Robby and his inability to keep a relationship in Season 2.

“We are talking about Robby and his past relationships and what that means moving forward and where he is in his life. And that’s an ongoing discussion, and it’s an interesting one because we do want to explore that more and take him to a place and find out what he wants,” he details. “What does Robby want? Where does he want to be at the end of this year in his life? When is he going to settle down or what is he looking for?”
