Heartstopper fans, grab your tissues, because Kit Connor and Joe Locke are trading in “hi” for a bittersweet “bye” to Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring.

On April 22, Netflix officially revealed that the final installment of Nick and Charlie’s love story, a movie titled Heartstopper Forever (sobbing at that one, btw), is on its way this July. Ahead of the Heartstopper movie, author Alice Oseman revealed that their final Heartstopper graphic novel would arrive on July 7. Debuting 10 days before the movie, Heartstopper Volume 6 is set to conclude Nick and Charlie’s epic romance, serving as the basis for the onscreen conclusion as well.

Exactly one year ago, it was announced that the beloved queer love story would be returning to Netflix! However, instead of the fourth and final season that many fans expected, Connor and would conclude the beloved romance of Nick and Charlie by starring in (and executive producing!) a Heartstopper feature film. A few months removed from the announcement, Heartstopper stars Connor and Locke were spotted filming at a train station in Leeds, and the majority of the cast were photographed together at a Billie Eilish concert on July 14. By July 27, the Heartstopper film had officially wrapped and moved into post-production.

Oseman also took to their Instagram. “Day 35. That’s a wrap on the Heartstopper film 🍂,” the author began. “I’d never worked in a team in my career before working on the Heartstopper screen adaptation, and the Heartstopper shoots have shown me what magic can happen when so many creative minds come together. Heartstopper means the world to me, and it’s always been a little scary to put it into other people’s hands, but it’s been met with so much care and passion and dedication and love. I’m so thankful to everyone who has been a part of it… so far! Now we begin the edit!!!”

When is Alice Oseman’s next graphic novel coming out?

Oseman’s sixth and final volume of Heartstopper is set to publish on July 2, 2026, in the U.K. and on July 7, 2026, in the U.S. and Canada. On September 24, Oseman posted a video, opening the Heartstopper 2026 calendar to July and writing “Vol. 6 Release Date!!” on July 2, right next to the box noting “Tara’s birthday” on July 3. They captioned the video, “Heartstopper Volume 6 will be released on the 2nd July 2026 🍂 Almost time to say goodbye to Heartstopper… Still drawing it right now and having a great time!!! But I will be very sad when it’s over 🥲.”

But Charlie’s busy with his bid to become head boy. And while Nick is preparing to leave for uni, he’s starting to wonder who he’ll be… Without Charlie,” the synopsis read.

Oseman posted confirmation that the adaptation will share a plot with their sixth Heartstopper graphic novel. We are getting to tell the end of the story!!!”

Who is returning for Heartstopper Forever?

Netflix has confirmed that “Kit Connor and Joe Locke will return to lead the Heartstopper feature film as teen lovebirds Nick and Charlie.” They will be joined by Yasmin Finney (Elle), William Gao (Tao), Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), Tobie Donovan (Isaac), and Rhea Norwood (Imogen).

A photo posted by Netflix UK of the majority of the original Heartstopper cast together at a Billie Eilish concert during filming confirmed that Heartstopper Forever would feature the same cast as the beloved show. In the image, Connor and Locke pose with Finney, Donovan, Brown, and Edgell, along with other beloved cast members, Jenny Walser (Tori), Nima Taleghani (Mr. Farouk), Fisayo Akinade (Mr. Ajayi), and Darragh Hand (Michael).

While series regular William Gao (Tao) was not photographed at the Eilish concert, Connor sported a shirt with Gao’s face on it, making it clear that their beloved costar had not been forgotten.

On April 17, Netflix also revealed that Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland) would be taking over the role of Nick’s mom, Sarah Nelson, as Olivia Colman was not able to return for the film. Derek Jacobi (Last Tango in Halifax) will also be appearing in a cameo role.

What does this mean for Heartstopper Season 4?

While we are thrilled that there will be a Heartstopper film, the news is bittersweet. Unfortunately, the film will conclude the series, and there will be no Heartstopper Season 4.

Kit Connor and Joe Locke in 'Heartstopper' Season 3

Netflix

This news has been incredibly divisive for fans of the show, who have made their feelings known in the comments of Netflix’s Instagram announcement. Some fans have taken a moment to mourn the fourth season that could have been. As one commenter put it, “I’m not ready for it to end just yet. 8 30-minute episodes already wasn’t long enough.” However, others were incredibly stoked, including one who commented, “I’ll need the movie to be about 17 hours long thanks.”

Locke also made his enthusiasm known, cheekily commenting, “I fancy a movie.” No matter where they stand on the movie, everyone can agree that any new Heartstopper content is a good thing. As one commenter put it, “[Heartstopper] isn’t just a show — it’s a safe place, a heartbeat, a quiet ‘you’re not alone’ in a loud world.”

What happened at the end of Heartstopper Season 3?

Nick and Charlie experienced a range of highs and lows during the third season of Heartstopper. For the first time as a couple, they faced a taste of long distance when Nick travelled to Mallorca with his aunt (Hayley Atwell). While Nick was away, Charlie’s eating disorder and overall struggle with his mental health came to a head.

During the season, Charlie sought treatment at an inpatient mental health clinic, where he received an OCD [obsessive-compulsive disorder] diagnosis. Reunited at the end of the season, Nick and Charlie took their relationship to the next level by having sex for the first time.
