Exactly a year after the show premiered, Netflix made a major announcement about Season 2 and shared details about new cast members. The debut season followed Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.) and Keisha (Lovie Simone) as they fell in love during their high school years. The couple’s beautiful tale of first love also featured them navigating school, their identity, and their transition into adulthood. So, what’s next?

Now that Forever is in its Season 2 era, Swooon has your full guide to everything we know about the premiere date, new cast, what Season 2 will be about, and more.

When did Forever Season 2 start filming?

Forever started filming Season 2 in Los Angeles on May 8, 2026. Netflix released an official photo of Simone and Cooper Jr. on the set together. The series was initially billed as a limited series, but the success of the first season inspired the Forever team to continue the story.

“There’s absolutely room for that,” showrunner/creator/writer Mara Brock Akil told Entertainment Weekly about Season 2 after the first season premiered. “In this art form, I don’t make it for myself. I’m making it for an audience. I believe that the audience wants character-driven, complex love stories. If the audience wants more, I want more. Let’s go do it.”

When will Forever Season 2 premiere?

Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for Forever Season 2. The second season will consist of eight episodes and will likely be released in 2027.

Who is in the Forever Season 2 cast?

You can take a deep breath because Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone are returning as Justin and Keisha.

Simone told Swooon that she wanted to explore more of Keisha’s story in Season 2. The actress said she hoped to see Keisha discover “what she’s really interested in post-high school. I feel like high school was her world. High school was her everything. It was the blueprint to the next step. So I do want to see what it looks like for Keisha to figure out her next blueprint and her next step and seeing what she looks like in the middle of that, rather in the middle of meeting a lover for the first time.”

As for Justin and Keisha’s future, Simone believed they would reconnect. “I think a lot of first loves reconnect, even if it doesn’t last forever, they always reconnect,” she revealed.

Additional cast members from the first season will be returning as well, including Karen Pittman as Justin’s mother, Dawn, Wood Harris as Justin’s father, Eric, and Xosha Roquemore as Keisha’s mother, Shelly.

Malaika Guttoh will be joining Season 2 as a new series regular. She’ll play Ameena. Recurring guest stars include Avery Wills Jr. as Jaden and Tre McBride as Elijah.

Grammy-Award winning Khris Riddick-Tynes has joined as the Executive Music Producer for Season 2, with Kier Lehman returning as Music Supervisor, and Original Music by Until Tomorrow.

What will Forever Season 2 be about?

Netflix has released the official Season 2 logline: “Can exes really be friends? Four years later, Justin and Keisha are doing pretty well post-pandemic—new relationships, real jobs, and adulting their big dreams—that is…until they run into each other in summer 2023.”

Akil opened up about Forever Season 2 as the show started filming. “Season 2 of Forever is in production, and we are home — back in Los Angeles, back inside a love story that keeps revealing itself,” she told Tudum. “This time, through friendship. Because when you’re standing at the edge of adulthood, staring into the abyss, it’s your real ones you want to run back to. Every choice feels final, even though it’s your first time being truly grown. We are thrilled to be back, diving deeper into love’s most complicated question — is forever truly forever?”

How did Forever on Netflix end?

After a year and a half together, Justin and Keisha decide to end their relationship as they prepare to graduate. Keisha is headed off to Howard University on a track scholarship, while Justin is trying to figure out what he truly wants.

Their breakup is painful but necessary. Justin acknowledges that he’ll continue to “keep making” Keisha his whole world if they don’t make a clean break. Keisha urges Justin to put himself first for once and not cave to his parents’ expectations. He ends up taking a gap year from Northwestern to pursue music. The love between them is evident in their final dinner out together. For hopeless romantics, it’s a shred of hope for these two. Or it’s a final goodbye of two people who still love each other but are headed down different paths.
