‘Supernatural’: Did Jensen Ackles Confirm ‘Watching Over Me’ Song Is About Castiel?

Destiel news in 2025? No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you.
Nearly five years after sci-fi series Supernatural aired its final episode, star Jensen Ackles recently put a fan theory to rest about whether or not his band’s song, “Watching over Me,” is inspired by Castiel (Misha Collins). Ackles, who’s a singer-songwriter in the rock duo Radio Company, was questioned about the song at the Purgatory 9 convention in Germany, which took place from May 31 to June 1.
Fans videos captured Ackles’ cryptic response: “Yes, ‘Watching over Me’ was definitely — not all of it, but there were many lyrics in there that were inspired by that… that story. Yes.”
He prefaced the reveal by saying that many of the songs he writes with collaborator Steve Carlson have double meanings. “They are analogies or there’s a way to kind of read two meanings into them,” he adds in the video.
Reading the lyrics, it’s clear why fans made the connection between the song, which is included on Radio Company’s 2021 album Vol. 2, and Supernatural. In the show, Heaven charges the angel Castiel with watching over Ackles’ Dean Winchester, and he’s constantly stepping in to protect Dean from danger.

Further, Castiel is introduced in Season 4 after he saves Dean’s soul from Hell. Resurrected, Dean wakes up in a coffin and digs himself out of his grave, which could be referenced in Ackles’ lyrics. “When I was falling down / Crawling in the dirt / Is it fair enough to say / That I needed you through the crazy pain,” Ackles sings.
The pair form a close bond over the course of the series, and as a result, “Destiel” emerged as one of Supernatural’s most popular — if not the most popular — ships. Here and there, the show hinted that the characters’ relationship might develop into something more romantic, though nothing came of it until the fifteenth — and final — season.
In the lead-up to the controversial finale, a Castiel confesses his love for Dean before he dies. “The one thing I want… It’s something I know I can’t have,” he says. “You’re the most caring man on Earth. You are the most selfless, loving human being I will ever know. You know, ever since we met, ever since I pulled you out of Hell… Knowing you has changed me.”
Even years after the finale, Destiel lives rent-free in many fans’ minds. It’s not the first time Ackles’ song has been brought up at a fan convention, either. In 2022, Collins discussed the song during a panel. “It’s about Cas — at least, that’s what he told me to make me not feel jealous,” Collins joked in a TikTok video. “Did you write this about another angel? Jensen, who is the other angel?”
