‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’s Britney & AJ Talk ‘Engagement Bliss’ and Wedding Plans

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for The Ultimatum: Queer Love Season 2.]
Not all couples make it out of The Ultimatum: Queer Love intact, but some are still happily engaged by the time the reunion episode airs. On July 2, Season 2 viewers found out AJ Blount and Britney Thompson are part of the latter group.
After putting it all on the line a little over a year ago, AJ and Britney looked back with Swooon at how the show impacted their relationship. They also caught us up on what “engagement bliss” — AJ’s words — has been like over the past year and what the future holds for them.
“I feel like, honestly, we fell more in love from all of this,” Britney said. “I think that we just truly have been very lovey and in tune with each other and just prioritizing our time together. We wake up, reconnect, we go to bed, reconnect, so I think it’s just been beautiful.”
After dating for five years, Britney gave the Ultimatum, while AJ hesitated to take the next step. She wanted to make sure they were equals in all aspects of their lives before tying the knot. She also expressed concern that Britney’s work would get in the way of their marriage.
“I don’t want to be that piece that holds you back because I’m not asking that. I’m just asking for work-life balance,’” AJ said. “So watching her do that throughout the experience of The Ultimatum and then practice and preach it within our one-year-and-some-change engagement — top tier.”

Britney said that the show cemented what she already believed: Love is the most important part of marriage. “Everything else can be figured out as long as we’re both willing to put in the work, and we both recognize what needs to be worked on and cater and nurture those parts of our partner that’s longing for those things and needs those things,” she explained.
“I think we can get through anything,” she added. “I think that’s where we’re at in our engagement period as well.”
AJ agreed that the show confirmed the love they already had for each other. She had the clarity she was looking for by the time she was getting down on one knee. “I already knew what I had, and I think the Ultimatum definitely was a big, heavy set reminder of, ‘Hey, you have something good here. You don’t want to lose that,’” she reflected.
Since then, the couple has been focused on enjoying engagement. As great as it’s been taking their time, AJ did say that she doesn’t want to be engaged forever. “I do want to tie the knot hopefully next year or the following year after,” she said.
While they haven’t made any concrete wedding plans, Britney revealed that they have been discussing what an ideal marriage or wedding would look like for them. But right now? “I think what’s in our immediate future is focusing on just building a life together,” she said, adding that they hope to travel, too. “That was something that we loved to do before, so I think we just want to kind of get back into what we love to do and what makes us us.”
That being said, AJ and Britney’s wedding vision board isn’t totally empty. AJ wants to throw a Caribbean carnival party, which Britney is completely on board with. “I would hope that we could have a little bit of Mas dancers, have some people come in, maybe on some stilts,” AJ said. “That’s what I’m hoping for — and also lots and lots of oxtail.”
Season 2 viewers will remember that Britney cooked oxtail for her trial wife, Marita. When AJ found out, she wasn’t too happy about it. However, Britney might able to make it up to her fiancée by preparing the dish herself for their big day. “Maybe, but I don’t want to work over my wedding,” she laughed. “I’ll just make sure the chef’s got it down pat.”
