‘Chad Powers’ Boss Teases ‘Big Romance at the Heart’ of the Show

Glen Powell is keeping that romantic leading man energy alive in Chad Powers. The Anyone But You star returns to TV in the upcoming Hulu sports comedy to play the titular character.
Naturally, Swooon had to get the scoop about whether or not Chad Powers is going to be an all-star when it comes to a great TV love story. Series cocreator Michael Waldron spilled on what to expect from Chad in the romance department.
“[There’s a] big romance at the heart of Chad,” he told Swooon at the Disney Upfronts in May. “I think that all of my favorite references for this, Bull Durham, Major League, the great sports movies that I grew up loving were anchored by great romances, and I love romances. And so everything I write, I try to anchor in that, so for sure. There’s a really interesting one at the heart of Chad.”
The series follows disgraced quarterback Russ Holliday (Powell), who disguises himself as Chad Powers to revive his football career.
Waldron recognized that Powell is a “major heartthrob” these days after hits like Anyone But You, Top Gun: Maverick, Twisters, and Hit Man. “I was always like, ‘We gotta get him shirtless in this thing.’ I was always trying to push him to take his shirt off, and he was like, ‘I can’t have my shirt off in every scene.'”
While we appreciate Waldron’s efforts regarding more Glen Powell shirtless scenes, he told Swooon that Powell is a “tremendous actor.” He added, “He can smolder with the best of them, but he also has brilliant character actor abilities. You see that in something like Hit Man, and so the great thing about doing this show with him, where he gets to play a guy playing another guy, we got to really stretch him, and I think he got to push himself in really exciting ways.”
