Katherine Izzo is heading back to the beach on Season 10 of Bachelor in Paradise. The last time she appeared on the show in 2023, she and John Henry Spurlock were one of two couples to get engaged at the final rose ceremony.

However, their love didn’t last, leaving Izzo on the market and ready to give Paradise another shot. Ahead of the new season’s premiere, scroll down for a refresher on what went down between Izzo and Spurlock.

What happened to Kat Izzo and John Henry Spurlock?

Izzo and Spurlock met on Season 9 of Bachelor in Paradise. The proposal aired during the finale on December 7, 2023, but just days later, the couple announced in a now-deleted joint Instagram post that they’d split.

“Our relationship has been filled with wonderful memories and growth, something we looked forward to sharing with you,” they wrote. “While our paths are taking different directions due to our career goals not aligning, we are grateful for the love and support we’ve received from our family, friends, and Bachelor Nation. While this decision wasn’t easy, we believe it’s the right step for both of us as individuals.”

Why did Kat Izzo and John Henry Spurlock split?

Since the breakup, Izzo and Spurlock have both opened up about what went wrong. He appeared on the Almost Famous podcast in April 2024 and reiterated that different career paths were the main reason for the split.

Spurlock said he was clear with Izzo from the start that his career as a commercial diver was “not relationship friendly.” She moved to North Carolina to be closer to where he was working but always had her sight set on moving to San Diego.

“Things were going really well,” Spurlock admitted. “Now, I have this job and then I get in this relationship. Then now it’s like, okay, I have to start figuring out what I’m going to do, how I’m going to make this transition to a career that is going to be a lot easier for me and her to work with. It just caught me by surprise. Now I’m starting to stress out about how I’m going to make this move.”

While trying to figure out the next steps, the “doubts” started creeping in, and Spurlock said he started noticing his and Izzo’s “differences” more. Watching the show back made things “extremely hard” for both reality stars, he said. “Then, basically, I called it quits,” Spurlock admitted. “I said, ‘This doesn’t feel right. I think this should be a lot easier than what it is.’ It just wasn’t the case.”

Izzo agreed with a lot of what Spurlock said when she appeared on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast. “You know, nothing serious happened,” she shared. “I think through the airing of the show, we started to learn more about how we each handle conflict and adversity. And we just were not gonna … I mean it wasn’t my choice. But it ultimately ended up being something probably for the best.”

While she noted that there were no “major fights or anything like that,” she said she and Spurlock simply started to see their “incompatibility.” She continued, “He wanted to go into a different career path than originally we both thought he wanted to do, which ultimately led him to Hawaii. And it just happened at a really hard time emotionally with everything else going on. Overall, we’re two good people, but we’re definitely not each other’s people.”

How long were Kat Izzo and John Henry Spurlock together?

Izzo and Spurlock were together for about six months before their split. They filmed Bachelor in Paradise in June 2023 and announced their breakup on December 11, 2023, just days after the proposal aired.
