How Did Sarah Michelle Gellar & Freddie Prinze Jr. Meet? Inside Their 25-Year Romance
Freddie Prinze Jr. is returning to the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise 28 years after starring in the original film alongside his now-wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar. The two have now been married for more than two decades.

How did Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. meet?
Prinze and Gellar actually met on the set of the original I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997. The actor previously told People that he and his wife “really didn’t dig each other” at first. “Then one day I gave her a ride to the gym,” he shared. “We talked on the way up, and she was a cool chick.”
The pair remained friends after filming ended. In fact, they were still close when Prinze was filming his 1999 movie She’s All That. Gellar, who was at the height of fame amid the success of Buffy the Vampire Slayer at the time, even visited her pal on set and agreed to do a non-speaking cameo in the movie.
It wasn’t until January 2000 that the relationship turned from platonic to romantic when they went on their first date…accidentally. “We were friends for a very long time,” Gellar recalled in a 2020 interview with People. “We’d had many dinners before. And we were supposed to go [to dinner] with someone else, and the third person didn’t make it out, and we still decided to go.”

From there, “things just happened” after a “long car ride and a long dinner,” according to the actress.
She reflected on their first date in a 2020 Instagram post, writing, “20 years ago this week, my friend @realfreddieprinze and I were supposed to have dinner with a mutual friend from out of town. That friend missed her flight, but we decided to still meet and catch up. Now 20 years together, 17 plus married and two kids, we still go to that restaurant for dinner. So thank you @sloaney77 for not showing up for dinner.”
How long have Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. been married?
In September, the couple will celebrate 23 years of marriage. They tied the knot on September 1, 2002, in Mexico. The wedding came more than a year after Prinze popped the question in April 2001.
“One day, I just knew we were gonna get married and I knew I was gonna propose,” Prinze admitted to People. “I didn’t know when or how. And so I did and, fortunately, she was on the same page. My instincts were correct.”

Yes, they are proud parents to two children. Their daughter, Charlotte, was born in September 2009, followed by son Rocky in September 2012.
